Here is another problem indexed shifters solved. My wife wanted flat bars on her cafe cruiser bike.

OK it has a down tube and is indexed to one speed! Just not vintage except in concept.

I have to get a pair of these for my next 'modern' build. I'm sick of fighting with brifters and indexed FDs.

That's been one of my concerns, Brifters and indexed FD. I'm on the fence, about converting my Ciocc to Brifters. I'm guessing the trimming is a Pita . KB

3x8 Shimano 600 indexed downtube shifters

The Serotta Nova Special X was built in Columbus SPX during the 1980's. The geometry is great fit with a 64cm C-to-T seat-tube and a 60 C-to-C toptube. I'm using a 32 spoke wheelset featuring Shimano 600 tri-color hubs and Mavic Open Pro rims. The rear wheel was rebuilt and a Shimano Deore XTR eight-speed 12-28 cassette was installed. The Crankset is a Suntour Superbe with 52, 42 & 30 chainrings, the pedals also are Suntour Superbe. The rear derailleur is a Shimano long arm GS, the front derailleur is a Campagnolo for triple. Shifters are NOS Shimano eight-speed 600. The Brakes are Shimano Dura Ace and the levers are NOS Shimano 600. Currently I'm using new 700x23 Vittoria Rubino Pro tires. The cables and guides are new. The headset is a rebuilt Dura Ace and the BB is rebuilt Shimano.

2x7 Shimano Dura Ace indexed downtube shifters

I restored a 1989 Eddy Merckx Extra Corsa last year. It's got a new lease on life and it will stay in like-new condition for many years to come.

I purchased this well worn example from the original owner who had raced it extensively. He originally built it with Dura Ace 7401 components and I kept the bike mostly original where possible. However, heavy use forced me to replace many worn items.

The 2x7 indexed shifters are NOS items purchased last year. The Dura Ace derailleurs are nearly new replacements. The brakes and brake levers are NOS Shimano 600. It's a joy to ride and produces a fast pace.

7400 Dura Ace and Sante shifters won't play nice, so I run it in friction mode.

I hope we don't need a "7400/Sante, so the indexing doesn't quite work out exactly. I run it in friction mode" thread.

Terrible pic of my '89 Specialized Allez. 6 speed Suntour index shifters (I know, non drive side picture, blah blah) It's the only pic I have of it

A few pics of my Trek Elance that was 6 speed Shimano SIS when I bought it a few months ago, but is now built up 9 speed with barend shifters, 28mm Ruffy/Tuffy tires, Brown Brooks bar tape and a brown Brooks B17 Saddle. Have VO 35 mm fenders and a Tubus Logo rear rack for it that I need to get installed.

Most of the herd has bar-end shifters, but the Purple Haze still has them on the downtube.

My only bike with downtube shifters is one with 7-speed indexed Shimano:

I paired 105 levers with a 7402 RD, and it seems to work pretty reliably.

Nice bike! What size tires are you running? Also, do you know what kind of clearance there is for 700c tires? Would it fit 32s? I'm thinking about picking up a similar year Limited, but only if there is clearance for fenders and wider (700c) tires. Thanks.

My Raleigh Triathlon, that got upgraded from 6 indexed speeds to 8. Could have gone for 9 or 10 too, but 8 is plenty.

My Vento is running on Sachs Rival shifters and TriColor RD, actually I don't think I have a pic of it with the 600 so here is just the shifter while the Sante group was on it. The Proto is DA 8spd but running on CampI cassette
