Stronglight Crankset**********
Hello,
Can anyone identify the attached French made crankset? This picture is from an evil-bay ad that claims it's a Stronglight from a vintage Peugeot. I found the drive side only portion in the recycle bin at our local co-op. It has a swaged spider, but the chain rings are individual (52 & 40 tooth) with a BCD of 122. If I can find a reasonably matching NDS crank, it would look good on my 1964 Holdsworth Typhoon which is currently setup as a SS quasi path racer. I'm just seeking a little info on it.
Thanks and regards,
Van

Do you have any reason to doubt the pictured crankset is a Stronglight crankset from a Peugeot as "claimed" by the evil ebay seller? You will likely have a hard time finding an exact nds match from your evil local co-op or other evil non-ebay seller.
(Apologies in advance for the for the snide tone. I know I'm not answering your specific question about the crank, but I think ebay does get panned unnecessarily too often.)

Looks like the same crank that came on my early-80s Peugeot PH10LE, which is often described as a lower-midrange bike (Carbolite 103). It happens to be one of the lightest crank sets I've ever ever put on scale, I think I remember it weighing in at 770g w/rings. I only remember this because I was digging through my parts bin for a crank suitable for my Velo Cheapo fake Legnano and noticed that this one felt lighter in the hand than every other crank in the box at that time. I think it looks nice, too, so I put it on the bike. I read somewhere online that it's a Stronglite, one of their cheapo models. I don't remember seeing any Stronglite or other manufacturers marks on it.

I think it's a Solida 5271 crankset.....
Solida cranks were used on mostly the lowest level models from Peugeots.
The second set of round holes on the chainring is used to mount a chainring guard on to the DS crank....

Ah, yes, that sounds familiar, too. Thanks for the correction.

Hi folks,
Thanks for the info. It’s greatly appreciated and helps me with the application of the part. The referenced Holdsworth is currently in a Franken bike state with a mish-mash group of components. The major deviation from the theme is an Athena crankset with a single ring. Using the Solida CS would be a better match. A perfect match for the NDS crank is not necessary or desired. The co-op has bins of mismatched crank arms and I’m sure I can find something applicable.
My apologies to anyone that I may have offended with my “word play” regarding E-bay. I agree that E-bay provides worthwhile services, however, I have issues with the games that are played. These include; E-bay promoting and selling additional products and services, Groups that bid up their members listings to create a false value and/or demand, third party bidding, unscrupulous vendors who misrepresent their items or over charge for shipping, etc. As I recall, I got that terminology from this or another cycling forum.
By-the-way, I pirated the photo from an E-bay listing because I didn’t have the opportunity to take one during my volunteer shift.
Thanks again and apologies,
Van

Van, why and how is ebay evil?
When I've had issues with a seller, they have always been helpful and made certain the issue was resolved. That seems good.
They provide a process by which buyers can find difficult to locate products. That seems good.
Often times the product is priced at a competitive price. That seems good.
When the product is priced above what I think is a reasonable price, ebay doesn't force me to purchase the item through them. That seems good.
So help me (at least) understand why you feel it is evil.

I hadn't thought of that possibility. My sincerest apologies for miss-reading the intent. I'll delete my previous post.
Yet I'll readily admit, I've had that problem in phases in the past. At the moment it seems to be under control. One day at a time. To quote John Irving in Hotel New Hampshire, "Keep passing the open windows." In this case the open ebay tab on my computer.

Solida is a brand name and as with NERVAR and Stronglight the name of the manufacturer is different from the brand name.
Recalled seeing adverts in trade publications of the 1970's giving the maker's name as something like Haubptman. Tried a search on this without success so went to Tonton thinking they would be sure to have it but alas, no cigar.
As ever in matters francaise, I sent a PM to our @Filochard who came through in golden style with the goods. Turns out I was misspelling the name.
The company history is explained in this wiki entry (click in window for google translation from the french):
https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stronglight
Fascinating reading to learn connections to Verot (Stronglight) and Peyrard (Nervar). Also includes a mention of Williams. Interestingly no mention of Duprat.

Big thank you once again to Filochard!
