Pop goes the old dunlop (tire and tube for steel DL1 rims)
It was a dark and stormy night...
Who am I kidding, it was California on a sunny spring afternoon and was just itching to take Murphy (the DL-1L) for a tour of the neighborhood. The tires were pretty rough but I added some air anyways and poof! scared the daylights out of me.
IMG_2840.JPGIMG_2823.JPG
So now I have to find replacement 28x 1 1/2 tires and tubes. Any suggestions? I had been eyeing some schalbe deltas in creme. But now that we've seen the inside of the rim I'm not so sure. One rim is stamped F250 and the other F350- no idea what that is about.
Someone called them westwoods. Do they still make a tire for them or do I now need to switch out the old SA stamped steel rims?

I'm pretty sure I bought 26 x 1 3/8" tires. Here's an article from Bike Tires Direct, where I often get tires.

For a DL-1, it'd be 28x1-1/2, or 40-635. There are several options available, and as long as you have a tire made for a 635mm rim, you shouldn't run into any problems with it fitting the Westwood rim.

Yes, what agmetal advised. I bought two tires when one began to let go at the bead. Farewell Dunlop.
Harris Cyclery has the correct ones. Im sure other places too. Asian import. You might find Schwalbe's

that is exactly what I was hoping. I checked Velouria's blog on her restored 70 DL-1L and apparently we have the same taste in tires.

Those Schwalbe tires are great, I have 2 sets of black ones in use and they are long lasting for me.

I tried something different from the traditional block tread roadster tire on my latest DL-1 project. Conti Tour Rides. They claim to be puncture resistant. Rode it everyday in Southern Florida which has to be the world capital of roadside trash. So far, so good. Nice road feel too. They come in black, cream or brown wall.

I'll second the BikeTiresDirect reco above. I've been using them for a few years now and sometimes post wicked deals over here for vintage-fitting tires. They price match with any other legitimate authorized vendor online - i.e. actual storefronts, not eBay. Just this past 4 weeks, I was able to pick up a several pairs of Kenda K131 27x1-3/8 cyclocross tires for $7/each and just this week nabbed some Michelin Protek Cross 700x35c tires for $9.99/ea (60% off most outlet prices). Can't beat the $5 domestic shipping, and their pricematching system is very easy to use.

I'll keep bikesdirect bookmarked and just check in every once in a while. I'm curious about finding brown tires for her. I'm going to need a bigger shop.

All good suggestions. I grabbed the delta cruisers because they were easy to locate and would get here in just a few days. I think I did look for some other options like a touring tire but couldn't find anything besides black in 28x1.5 / 40x635. The ride should be the first priority but Murphy just too pretty for standard black

WRT 28", be aware that much (all?) of continental Europe refers to 700c/29er/ISO 622 as 28".

BTW is anyone still using Woods (Dunlop) valves? I haven't seen one in decades. That would be the hardcore purist choice for a Dunlop rim, but probably no one would know except the owner and/or designated tire pumper.

I have a few in the drawer. I have had them on old Raleigh 3-speeds, but found them fiddly to fill, so better left in the bin!

To fill them, I use the Presta-side of my pump's head, and if I recall correctly the rim's valve hole has the same diameter as the one used for Schraeder valves. I was flummoxed at first when I bought a bike here that had them, but I find the system quite intuitive and I can buy a pair of valves and caps or modern tubes at most hardware stores, home improvement stores, car part stores, and even many grocery stores.
