Nishiki – Cresta: Request for information/background on this frame/fork.
I just received my Father’s Day gift a day early from the wife.
A Nishiki Cresta frame and fork which will become a very nice project/build, but first I hope you can shed some light on the background of this bike, so here’s what I can tell you:
Serial Number: KC 29584
Sold out of the: “Chula Vista Schwinn” (I suppose as it has their sticker on it)
“Tange 3.(?)” stamped on steerer tube
“Handcrafted by Kawamura” decal on chain stay
“Shimano” band on down tube, I presume for shifter cables from bar end shifters ?
“Suntour GT-III” rear drop outs
Metal (aluminum?) chain stay shield on drive side chain stay
“Nishiki” stamped on top of seat stay
“Tange-(--)” drop outs on fork.
Double braze-ons front fork and rear drop out for fenders and racks front/back
Chain hanger on drive side chain stay.
“Kawamura-Japan” bottom bracket
100 mm front fork spacing/125mm rear spacing
Triple water bottle attachment points
“N” stamped on top of fork lug
“Nishiki Double Butted Chrome-Moly Tange” decal at top of seat tube
Any information you can share about this bike will be greatly appreciated. I do have a catalog page for a “Cresta-15 Speed” whose paint scheme is identical to this bike, however it has a down tube band that the down tube shifters are attached to. Otherwise they appear to be idential in frame/fork.
Pictures will now follow.

This is the best side down tube decal, other side is all there but with gouges, hope the head tube decal comes out upright, tried to get it to orient right in editing it.

Rear drop outs and lovely metal chain guard someone tried to pry off sometime in the past. Sigh.

The "Shimano" band for what I believe would be bar end shifters is different from the catalog, perhaps a change made by a previous owner from the down tube shifters?

Dia Compe cantilever brakes and additional down tube water bottle attachment to allow carry of three water bottles. And my foot!
Thanks again for any information you can provide about this Nishiki Cresta frame/fork.

T-Mar thanks for your write up on Nishiki serial numbers, given what you posted and with a serial number of KC 29584 I arrive at the following:
K= US market pre-1985.
C=1983 manufacture year.
29564=29564 frame produced in 1983 for the US market.
Now if anyone knows where I can find a 1983 Nishiki catalog?
VintageRide if you come across this post I saw the picture you posted of your brother's 85 Cresta in a different and earlier post and it's color and decals match mine, except for the missing down tube shifters and shift bracket for what I believe would be bar end shifters. Did they keep this paint/design from 83 through 85? Thanks
