A tape worth having

For your consideration:

3M 8672

I've used this for several years - great stuff, IMO. Clear, nearly invisible, stays put, doesn't yellow, and tough. I wrap it around frame tubes under bottle cage clamps, top tube brake cable clamps, etc. A layer goes on the chainstay to avoid further paint dings.

Here's a wrap around the downtube to prevent the brake arm from making further damage.

Even used it on my bars and stem so my front-mount bottle cage won't mar the anodized aluminum. Hasn't worn through in 3+ years.

It's not cheap, but worth it, IMO.

Lots of decent 3M products, just often locating them is a challenge unless you want an entire box of 12 to 24 rolls.

Bikes: Mostly English - predominantly Raleighs

Is that a 70's Raleigh International?

It may seem odd to start a thread on a protective tape, but I really have had great luck with this stuff. I don't think 3M makes a bad product.

That'd be the 1974 Paramount I just acquired. There's another thread covering that.

Reminds me, I may try Gorilla Tape to replace the old chainstay tape on one bike. That Gorilla Tape held up for a couple of years as temporary caulking to seal the bathroom floor while waiting for the apartment maintenance guy to finally properly fix a neighbor's plumbing leak. Sealed as well as caulk to prevent water from leaking into the adjacent rooms. When I finally peeled it up the tape was still pliable, hadn't cracked or deteriorated, and the adhesive didn't leave a residue like old duct tape does.

Bikes: 1996 Bianchi Reparto Corse Cyclocross steel, 1985 Bridgestone 400, 1986 Trek Elance 400, 2007 Cannondale Synapse carbon, 1992 Cannondale R400

Sometimes...

Beware after effects of using protect tape. I put some on a Bianchi with pearl celeste. It was on there for 6 years. I peeled it off for a full frame cleaning. Despite clear coat over paint, the paint faded. The protect tape did a great job of blocking UV rays! So there are some spots with brighter celestial compared to most of the frame. Most people would never notice unless the light was just right.

Cheers

I like the general idea of using tapes to protect finishes (used such extensively on my downhill ski tops in the 80's), but do question using it over non-clearcoated over decals, as for whatever reason you might have to ever remove/replace the tape in the future, for reasons like moisture infiltration under the tape causing delamination/fogging, the decal will most likely come off with the tape, and we know some decals are unobtanium......

Yeah, I had members of the immediate family who were both miners and did their mining in Minnesota, and so happens that they had a very warm spot for 3M and thought they could do no wrong.
I tend to think so, too but "don't think 3M makes a bad product."?
Nah, I worked on packaging design for a division of 3M many years back and when the adhesive engineers (or chemists) came thru once on a visit saw that we used "Super 77" spray adhesive in our spray booth, told us that it was the one thing that they refused to use themselves...sure it sticks real well but you have to quit breathing.

3m

Post-it notes; made enough $$ for twenty companies, much less one. Happy accident.

Done.
