A couple weeks ago, I became the proud owner of rhm 188 (one of rhm's re-leathered saddles). The thread for the build that it will be going on is here.

Anyway, I have used the time that it has been drying to sand the rivets to the smoothness I desire, and planning out my next extreme action. Leather Paint.

I gave it a couple coats today after mixing up some Sapphire and Silver Metallic leather paint. Here's what it looks like now.



Not 100% sure of the durability of the finish, but I will find out before too long.

Am now working on leather bar tape and brake hood covers, which I intend to paint to match.

Such and interesting project! We'll excuse you for whipping this one out!

Sweet experiment. Hope it lasts. Though, I'd probably wear pants that I'm ok about getting paint transfer on. I mean, unless you want some stylin' and sparklin' additions to the caboose end of your favorite jeans!

While I can't say I'd intentionally modify an [MENTION=73614]rhm[/MENTION] original work of art and craftsmanship, I do find the concept and the plan to be an exceptionally creative one. So

Have rhm's blessing, and he was actually complicit (at least with the Sapphire paint, which was part of the package deal that was delivered a couple weeks back). Worst case - it all rubs off. Time will tell.

Am also a bit puzzled by RiddleofSteel's allusion to jeans. I can wear them for walking around, but they don't work for me when riding - at least not for going any farther than a mile. If they fit my waist, they chafe my thighs on a bike. Been like this since High School.

I consulted with a leather expert, and he was encouraging about the Angelus paint. I fact I bought a little jar of Turquoise paint that looks to me to be the color of my Holdsworth. Though I haven't decided what saddle to try it on, I'm definitely going to try it!

First ride report.

No apparent transfer of colors or sparkles to black cycling shorts on a dry, 12 mile test ride. I am bypassing providing photographic evidence though.

Have a couple of very minor (cosmetic) adjustments to make before taking "after" pictures and reviving/concluding the thread about the bicycle's "restoration".

To touch up the scuffs on my Fuji's 40+ yr old Fujita Belt saddle, I use Kiwi leather dye. Fortunately, black is black... However, a trip to a cobbler (or if Tandy Leather is still around) may yield dyes in many other colors.

For water resistance, I try to treat the saddle -- including the undersides - with Pecard Silicone leather preservative. I also used this stuff on my leather shoes and boots when I was a mail carrier for 33 years. Applied once or twice a year and it kept my feet dry when walking through rain or snow and the leather never broke down. The 4 fl oz can has lasted me for well over 20 years!
