Bikes: A few

It's not your fault. You had a nice thread about a great bike score.

Have you decided what you are going to do between the two bikes?

Those who are mentally too limited to be paid minimum wage will be on SSi. Not SSDi, but SSi as they havemt paid i to the system due to not being able to. With those SSi benefits comes healthcare and housing assistance(group home with 24hr caretaker setup).
Over $120 or so in earnings per month(dpnt qupte that, but its close), the person has their SSi reduced for work performed. If they earn too much, they no longer qualify for the assistance beyond monetary conpensation.
I wpuld say that the situation would in fact be worse if they were paid too much to qualify and therefore didnt have the housing and medical assistance.

To the employer's side- if 3 people with mental limitations do the work of 1 fully capable minimum wage earner, then to pay each of them minimum wage wouldnt happen. Instead, 1 fully capable person wpuld work. This doesnt benefit those 3 partially capable people as there are numerous studies which clearly tie worth of self and life satisfaction to being a contributong member of society.

This can completely be seen as a company(or nonprofit) taking advantage of the disabled, or it can be seen as the best of a less than ideal situation. The alternative os no better for those low wage earners.

I wont comment on the section8 claim, food stamps, or any of the pther hot button phrases you mentioned.
Fact remains that every dollar that you need to live but your boss won't pay, the government has to try and close the gap. Companies paying poverty wages are offloading their real wage costs to the welfare office, and I'm tired of it. If a company can't pay the real cost of the human beings they hire, they deserve to go bankrupt in that free market Americans like so much. If a company can pay, but won't, they can go to hell.

I say that as someone who's been on various different kinds of in-work-welfare for years, and my mother before that her whole life. We get called "dole scroungers" while working a full time, yet the boss who expects the meagre wages he pays to be topped up with HM Gov's Universal Credit rolls in a Rolls and gets invited to the very best social occasions. The welfare state is supposed to be a safety net, not a hidden subsidy for cheapskate bosses.

I think I'll most likely try the swap, probably wait a couple months, Garage is not air conditioned so I do most bike work outside the summer months. And I need to do some research on the brifters, I don't like the stem shifters on the Le Tour, and the down tube shifters seem suicidal... I usually ride a a flat bar hybrid, so I could do a flat bar conversion w/trigger shifters too.

If you can reach for a water bottle or a toestrap you can use downtube shifters, don't worry. The question is if they're friction or indexed. It can take a good long while to learn friction shifting.

I don't think there was ever any six speed brifters and seven are a bit hard to find. Freewheel or cassette hub? Could go with eight, that's everywhere.

Nothing wrong with flat bar set ups set with thumb shifters. If you mostly like to ride slightly upright, it helpful in a city setting.

I understand completely about working in a hot space! Takes the fun out of it.

Alleytom, I'm enjoying the bike clamp clamped in the bench vise trick.

Yeah this thread veered off into politics and there's no way in heck it will ever veer back on track.

Nice score, OP.
