I grabbed a set of Araya World Champion tubular wheels laced to old Dura Ace freehubs and an old NIB Deore XT cassette to go with today. An employee mentioned them to me a few days ago. Owner said “I was kinda waiting for you to find those.” Guess they’ve got my preferences pegged.

I’ll probably respoke them this winter (front is currently radial) and use them on the CX bike next season in place of the current Dura Ace freewheel set I have on there now.

"Vintage bikes getting a little crazy at the Rusty Spoke in Phoenix."

Thanks for posting that pic of the vintage bike lineup, albrt.
I miss the metro Phoenix bike scene soooooo badly.
I used to hit the Bike Saviours weekly while we were down there every winter.

hey I know that bike!

Stopped by our local today to search for a stem. I put that co-op found Ideale Diagonale saddle on my dropbar Marin and went for a test ride, which only reinforced the feeling of being too close-coupled (in the monkey-on-a-football way) so I got there at opening and found a very tall, adjustable 25.4 with removable faceplate. I really wanted an old '90s GT-type T-Bone copy with a tall steep rise but this will have to do. Plenty of height but I hope it has enough reach. Might have to keep looking.

After business was settled I took a look around to see what else might be there. I have high hopes for the great stuff that never turns up but a little bit of weirdness is always welcome. This Concord Royale was there with wishbone seatstays and a racy look. Don't see many of this brand.

We also don't get many Rocky Mountain bikes around here.

This little Cannondale was interesting. Forgot they made these with 650 wheels.

I am not an expert, but I've never seen a Sequoia from that era painted green. I strongly think it's a repaint, especially with those decals/markings.

I've never seen that font before so yeah, probably a repaint. If it's even a Specialized.

Charles Wahl 10-23-25 06:41 PM

^^ I agree: dubious. Those seat stay caps don't look scalloped (concave) to me, and that seems to be a Specialized feature, no? The fork crown looks a bit flat, though it's hard to tell in the photo. And the rear brake bridge would have diamond-shaped bosses on the stays; maybe those are there, but not obviously. OP is encouraged to confirm. A serial number (on bottom of bottom bracket) would help.

The frame appears to have some things in common with this 1982 frame, but hard to tell with the fork crown, the rear dropouts, and some of the lugs not clearly visible in the picture.

https://bikeretrogrouch.blogspot.com...d-sequoia.html

Edit: I agree with Charles the seat stay looks different--at first I couldn't tell if the one in the retrogrouch post was concave, but I think it is.

I'm out of town this week, but I'll be interested to take a look if you still have it next week.

Good choice replacing the radials. Most hub flanges, particularly older ones, can't take the outward stress.

Albrt,
It is definitely a repaint.

It has been put in a safe place so it will be there when you get back. Ask Shop Manager Nicole about it and she can show it to you.

Don't hold it for me if somebody wants to buy it. It looks to be my size, but I have too many bikes already and the build is too modern for me.

All,
I am going to attach some more pics of this bike that I took today. The seat stays are concave where they join the seat tube. There are indeed diamond shaped lugs where the rear brake bridge attaches to the seat stays. The paint looks like it was a professional job, but definitely a repaint. I also measured it. 60cm seat tube C to Top.

Serial number suggests 1983 based on T-Mar's Asian serial number guide and other posts involving Specialized frames from this period.

Wooo Hooo - Finally Something Worth Buying At The Co-op.

OK folks. Check out what followed me home from the university bike co-op where I volunteer every Friday.
It's a 1984 Miyata 310 "Semi-Pro" in "Starlite Silver" on a 19.5" (49.5 cm) frame with Shimano "Golden Arrow" 105 ders
and shifter. It's totally original down to the Miyata-branded 100 PSI 27 x 1 1/8 "skinwall" tires and the badly
faded red cloth handlebar wrap......now a very badly faded pink. Check out the red-painted coach lines
around the lugs. Miyata quickly stopped this expensive "foolishness" on their entry level Semi-Pro bikes but it
shows how hard they were trying to increase their sales in the early 80's. I just looooove Miyatas and resurrecting
this one will be a labor of love for me. Too bad the frame is the smallest one offered in the Semi-Pro line cuz she'd be
a keeper if the frame was a 23".
Note that the bolded text in this description has been changed. Thanks to Pompiere for pointing out my errors.

Your bike doesn't look like it saw much use in its lifetime. Every piece looks to be original. It might be a 1984 model, built in late 1983. I bought my 310 in 1984 and it has the same style crank. The catalog for 1983 shows a different crank. My bike's serial number indicates it was built in late 1983. It still looks good in a low resolution picture, but there is a lot of nail polish covering the nicks and scrapes.:)

Retired rental bikes

My local co-op in Toledo Ohio bought over a hundred of these bikes that were used for a bike share/rental program perhaps 5-10 years ago. The program never really worked out and now it is a scooter rental operation. These must have been fairly expensive bikes when new. I believe it was solar charging for the rental electronics, 7 speed IGH, belt drive, 700c, dynamo front hub, and heavy. They said perhaps 50 went to Africa, and they got rid of another 10 or so, but have maybe 40 left. $125 gets one some interesting parts for transferring to another frame. IGH isn’t my thing, but it seems like a lot of parts for the price. Sorry about the poor pics, but it was upstairs in their warehouse storage area.

Pompiere, you're absolutely correct. Thank you for pointing out the differences. My serial number also indicates
1983 so I looked no further than the 1983 catalogue. Now, after looking at the 1984 catalogue pics, I can see the
differences.between the 2 model years. That red and white sticker on the 1984's seat tube is a very visible difference.
Now it's nice to know the color is "Starlite Silver" of 1984 rather than the "Metallic Silver" of 1983.
And I've now noticed that the 1983 has red brake cables while the 1984 has the clear coated stainless steel cables.
Again, many thanks for your correction of my erroneous presumption.

Back to Rag & Bones today to look for parts for the new-to-me Jeunet mixte. I need to make it taller to suit me and fit better, so a stem was the priority. Found an alloy item that might work but at 22.2 it will be my first attempt at "resizing" to 22.0mm. I'll buy some emery paper and give it a try, but I might want one with more reach. Also copped that little shim in case I wind up fitting a .833" instead.
https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...e9c216c9c6.jpg

You can see a different tire on the front, a Continental Contact in 37C and it fits with room to spare, one of the pair they had that I bought. Fatter tires than these might be desirable but that would probably mean buying new and I'm trying to cheap out as much as possible. Seven bucks each for decent used tires is a good deal. The rest of the haul includes an Uno 25.4 x 350mm black seatpost, unnecessary but a nice find, and good ol' SunTour Power stem shifters. Might use thumbies instead but it's good to have these just in case.
https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...07d35ee142.jpg

That's what I went for but I always like to look around. Panasonic DX4000 that I swear I posted back on the first page of this thread. Guy said the seatpost is stuck.

https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...ef3c00527a.jpg

There was a Brooks B17, sorta splayed but in nice shape otherwise. This was about to be put into the showcase. I'm all Brooksed up or I'd have bought it.
https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...87320fbce9.jpg

Another saddle of moderate interest, a Fuji Ladies' saddle. Back in my shop days we sold hundreds of these things to women riders. Just the other night I was searching for a pic of one of these and could not find one anywhere. This was on a bike I might have assembled and sold 45 years ago but it was buried under stuff against a wall so I could not get closer.
https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...1b36389c47.jpg

I did find a couple of SunTour front derailleurs but I'm not ready for them yet. Saw no rears. I'll wait to go through my own boxes of parts before I buy different derailleurs.

If you don't mind silver, paint stripper should make quick work of that black coating.

One session with stripper on this scratched up alloy stem cleaned it up nicely.

so you used to need one, but now you found it?
Because I do have a 36-hole front hub, but it's laced to a MA-40 rim and I am not inclined to unlace it.
If you still want one and would buy the entire wheel (rim and spokes are xlnt) then PM me.
