Trek serial number dating

Picked up a frame, serial number 289494. Vintage Trek site indicates its a 1987 model year, but not necessarily 1987 date of mfg. Is there a more precise way to date the frame?

Bikes: See the signature....

Compare the frame you have to the catalogs until you find one that fits the colorway? You'll likely never know "when" your frame was brazed up.

I'm legitimately curious why one would care if a frame is 30 years old or 30-years+2-mo old.

thanks all, trying to hit the right year. Based on color - 1988. Will start picking up period correct group parts - just for the fun of it
