When I was at SIU, I had an iron black Raleigh DL1, that paint was bullet proof. Fantastic bicycle, and it was so old, no one thought to steal it. Nowadays, (I still live in a college town)I even lock up the Facet when I go near town.

Bikes: Still have a few left!
Verification of above principle: In the 80's we parked our bikes in the basement of Portland's Oregon Pioneer Bldg. Thieves stole a co-worker's locked Cannondale and left my unlocked, black, Raleigh Sports behind. Don

Years ago I was sitting at an auto repair shop waiting for them to bring my car out. As I was waiting, there was an auto-salvage tow truck hauling away an incredibly awful looking 1965 Ford Mustang. It was beat to heck. I couldn't help but think about the day that the original buyer drove that off the lot and was the happiest person in the world.
My bikes and my cars, whether new or used get taken care of to the best of my ability. I bought them, and I never forget how much I paid for them.
