Frankenbike?
Just a shout out and thank you to everyone on this forum a month ago who educated me on U-brakes vs. cantilevers and short pull vs. long pull levers and so on! My 88' (I think) Timberline GT sat in my basement for the last 15 years with some damaged crank arm threads. I actually put it on CL about 5 years ago for $50, but no takers.
So I have a couple mountain bikes but wanted something for my 11 mile bike path loop, trips to the gym and so on. I figured I'd upgrade the brakes, put some skinnies on and bullhorn bars just cuz I like the way they look. Well, in the end, only the frame, crankset (hey, I like the biopace stuff) and FDR/shifter stayed. I knew it was time to stop when my wife started giving me the stink-eye as each new package arrived from Nashbar/Jensen/Amazon. I'm not sure what this thing is, but I really like the way it rides and pedals. Definitely wasn't a wise investment, but this bike is sentimental to me...I rode it along with a friend of mine who got me into MTBs back in college (we couldn't read enough about John Tomac back then!) Anyway, it was my first time building a bike and it was a lot of fun.
The only open item is the new RDR will not shift into the large sprocket on the new cassette (now 8spd.) Maybe because it's direct frame mounted?
Anyway, here are some before/after pics. I'm not much of a photographer so they’re not the best quality.
Hope everyone has a happy New Year!
Mike
