Vintage Raleigh bottom bracket threading

I recently bought a Raleigh Gran Tour from 1983 or 1984.

Am I correct that this will have Standard British 24 TPI threading in the bottom bracket, rather than Nottingham-specific 26 TPI?

And if that's correct, any reason why I cannot use a regular Shimano cartridge BB, assuming proper spindle length?

That is, any reason other than the heresy of using a cheap disposable BB in a beautiful full 531 vintage lightweight frame?

Carlton built frames used 68mm wide 24tpi bottom brackets.
I see no reason why a modern cartridge bb wouldn't work just fine.

I don't see any heresy there; disposables is disposables.

And I think the general rule of Raleighs is from 1972 onward to you don't need to worry about the funky old Raleigh special threading. (*Some possible exceptions) My 1972 Super Course is standard English threading.

If it makes you feel any better, buy an expensive disposable BB.

JK. When do we see pics?

Yeah, well, I've had a Phil Wood in my custom Jeff Lyon for 15 years now and have never hardly touched the thing.

This Raleigh is not going to be strictly a period build, and I guess Shimano cartridge BBs have now thoroughly proved themselves.

Wait for the big reveal with pix. Need to decide on rims and a few other things.

I'm more of an Italo-phile, so I may come back with a question or two, but this forum is sure the place to ask, thanks.

If you haven't taken it apart yet, just measure the BB shell width. Raleigh-thread BB shells are almost always 71mm (or wider.) BSC thread shells will be 68mm, of course.

From a recent ride up a local pass. Some gravel, overcast with a little rain.

My first Reynolds 531C frame.

Also, am posting my first pics to the forum, hope this works alright.

It is a seldom seen Raleigh model, and I'm glad you asked:
