I like the concept, but struggling to find a modestly priced one that fits 22.2.

Oogly Googly would likely be perfect.

I have to get something that mounts to the stem, rather than the steerer. The steerer has zero room.

If you have a junk brake lever from a kid's bike or MTB, those are pretty easy to modify for this purpose. The lever body fits the 22.2 mm quill, and it already has a cable stop and barrel adjuster built in. I have a photo somewhere....

Ah, yes, my bad. I thought it was a stem clamp. You could use a spacer, however. I could cut and slot a piece of stainless tubing that I use for my decaleurs. I could mail you a piece.

Beautiful. Will see if I can make that idea work.

That's really nice !
Otherwise I prefer the MAFAC type. The original Raleigh one isn't too bad looking, if a bit more complex than need be (it bolts together). The aluminum ones just look wrong on an older bike.

I later switched to sidepull brakes, so this piece is kicking around in a parts bin somewhere....

@USAZorro,

Could you solve your problem with a shorter stack height headset?

If the fork were drilled to accept a recessed nut, would that give enough slack to mount the Power Cable (or whatever) sandwiched between the rack and the fork? The rack’s mounting bolt would just go right through the Power Cable?

Not sure. The Tange has one of the shortest stack heights from what I understand.

I have sufficient dremelology to do something similar to rhm's hack.

The original headset on that bike had probably a 34mm stack height, similar to the Tange you're using. Rudi's hack looks like the way to go.

I thought that too, but I'm not sure the resulting angle will give me the desired braking with the wide fenders that I have.

Thanks ! I can't wait to ride it. I still haven't ridden 650b wheels yet.

Since you're back east, I'm guessing you already know that Peter Weigle prefers vintage Competitions for 650b conversions.
You also mentioned you might end up brazing on new bits, paint, etc. You doing the work yourself? Post a new thread on that if and when you start!

Hey ! Yes- I do know that Monsieur Weigle prefers them. That was why I sought out the Competitions. That and your post about your Weigleized Competition. You thankfully added important details that sealed the deal for me.
I'm still setting up my shop as we moved relatively recently and I have a lot of "toys".I get negativity about not just how many bikes I have... I have a bunch of torch experience, but need to make space.

I'm building this bike to take to FFD. It won't be pretty. I'm going to ride it, think about component choices and ogle the bikes at FFD. That should suffice for inspiration. Then I'll have the frame blasted and I'll get to work. I've enjoyed looking at your work very much !

Thanks for the kind words! I'm headed out to FFD as well. If you're interested in riding to FFD and a little credit card touring, We've got a gruppeto starting at Mastic Beach Friday morning, riding up through Orient Point, ferry to New London, then ride into Old Saybrook (6 miles from Peter's).

Thanks ! That looks like a nice ride to get there ! I'm coming from the north, otherwise I'd be glad to join.

I'm really looking forward to going. I've been meaning to go for years, but haven't been able to.
