I met Pineapple Bob in Berkeley once a long time ago.

I knew we could do it. Grant was with us.

jyl 03-03-18 12:41 PM

Anyone know what happened to pineapple Jane?

dedhed 03-07-18 06:01 PM

I got the email with the code do they send out an actual card or certificate?

jonwvara 03-07-18 07:10 PM

I've never bought anything from Rivendell, but I bought a couple of cards anyway. I consider that a small payback for GP's discovery--or whatever you want to call it--of the S24O. What a concept! I would not have thought of it on my own, but have enjoyed many of them since learning that they exist. Also for his recent blog post on "Self-Charity Rides," which made me laugh.

I'm hoping that he'll buy a Freewheel Key from me once he gets his cash flow straightened out.

M1T 03-10-18 11:25 AM

It takes courage and a good dose of humility to ask for this kind of help... From what I gather, Grant is a good guy and I hope for him and his employees' sake that this works. There's another guy selling a certain German made hub generator that I would not help (a condesending jerk), but Grant, yes...

No. It will just be a credit on your account.

Lascauxcaveman 03-14-18 12:12 AM

Bump as a last call on the raffle; up to $150 I think, but I'll go back though my PMs to make sure I've counted everyone. Anyone else have a Hail Mary they want to toss in to participate?

Drawing this Thursday, 15 March.

Lascauxcaveman 03-14-18 03:42 PM

Up to $160 now, and two donors have requested to not be in the actual drawing, so that's only 14 names in the hat as of today. I'll ck my PMs tomorrow morning for any last minute participants before I do the drawing.

It's my understanding there is no actual "gift card," just a code number for each $10 hail Mary. So, when I post the winner's handle here, each of you who've participated will need to PM that winner with your gift code. And I will PM a reminder to each of you to do so, to notify any of you who haven't seen the final update on this thread.

Cheers!

Rivendell Bicycle Works
2040 North Main St. #19 • Walnut Creek, CA 94596
Febuary 27th 2018

Thanks to you and not anything we did, in less than a week we went from me sure we’d be gone in four months — a fear I didn’t spread to the crew here— to solid money footing and optimism. Because of what you did, we can pay bills, buy inventory, pay credit card debts, pay decent chunks toward bikes already ordered and too late to take back, and pay off most of our line of credit. You must be wondering how much we took in. Businesses don’t customarily talk about specifics like that, but what you’ve done for us isn’t customary, either, and why should you, of all life on earth, have to be curious? t’s still trickling in, and we appreciate it all, but since last Th afternoon we’ve deposited a little more than $215,000.

I wondered whether or not to say the number, the only hesitation being that it might make some of you feel as though your $10 contribution for the gift certificate was a drop in the ocean. No! This had to be a massive collective effort. It would not have worked any other way, and there’s no ranking of contributions. Well...almost. BT bought a ten for the cause. That’s the one that meant the most to me, personally. Thanks, Brian. Holy cow.

Thanks to the rest of you, too—individuals and forums and websites and instagrammers and all those social media things that I don’t technically understand but I know work and made such a big difference here. If I name one I should name them all, but if I try I’ll forget one and feel horrible, so--argh-- thanks. BIG difference.

No simple thanks conveys what any of us are feeling, which is so much deeper and more complicated than that. What we’re feeling is huge relief, elation, and disbelief, and pressured, in a good way, to be worthy of it.

We have a restart traction, and we’re not going to blow it and waste your help.

From now on we’ll order and stock more conservatively, so we’re bound to sell out faster and might be out of stock when you finally want it. We’ll be better at the business, but we won’t change what’s working already, and I promise won’t get more mellow about bicycles or gear. We’re not joining the World Team.

It’s true that you saved Rivendell Bicycle Works and secured a future for the kinds of gear we cause to be, but it’s also an understatement. That’s just stuff. What you saved were jobs for the best people I know. You’re keeping us together, and we thank you for that and will never, ever ask again. — G

So cool!

I admit to having a competitive background and most of my bikes reflect that, but i have always been fond of what Rivendell and Co. were doing

My first bike as an adult was a bridgestone mb-6. I ate up every bit of information i could about the Bridgestone "lifestyle" .
Just recently read Grant's paleo eating book, as well as Just Ride

Lascauxcaveman 03-15-18 12:06 PM

Okay..... Drumroll please! The drawing has been drawn and the big winner is

dedhed!

I now ask those of you who participated to PM dedhed with your gift card codes. (Except those who already gave them to me, I'll forward that info to dedhed.) As a backup, I'll also PM a reminder to you in case you missed this post. Thank you all for your participation.

The gala drawing ceremony has been recorded and posted without edits verify authenticity. Some participants had more than one name in the hat, as they chipped in more than one gift card:

(Although I have to confess my lovely assistant Shay is not technically a senior auditor at PricewaterhouseCoopers, she's just one of the night managers at my hotel. But generally trustworthy.)

I love that you're doing this raffle. Very beautiful community feels for me.

dweenk 03-15-18 12:58 PM

Congrats dedhed.

The Golden Boy 03-15-18 01:00 PM

Congratulations dedhed!

n0+4c|u3 03-15-18 04:32 PM

Nice one dedhed!

dedhed 03-15-18 09:29 PM

Wow! I don't know what to say. This group is an awesome assemblage of people. I'll have to troll Riv's site for something to burn my good fortune on. Thanks to all who participated and especially lascauxcaveman for putting this together. When I find the time & order I'll let you know what came out of this. I figure I'll give Grant a little breathing room and not redeem them right away.
Thanks again to all of you!!!

Tell Shay the check's in the mail wink, wink.

I'm kind of pissy about this. I think the world is a better place with Grant and Rivendell in it- I'm no businessman- but you've got to sell the stuff you offer for sale.

https://www.bikeforums.net/20501145-post79.html

I've talked to Grant and Scott at Rivendell, Johanna at Waterford, Doc at Bicycle Doctor, Jeff at Revolution; I've driven 20 miles to Bike Doctors to get professionally measured and then back home, I've driven 70 miles to Revolution Cycles and back- I'm ****ing waving around $3000 saying "build me a ****ing bike." It shouldn't be this ****ing hard.

repechage 12-30-18 09:31 AM

Vaporware.
Aspirational product?

when I looked at the site just now, I got the message that a custom build was of building up a frame.
no custom frame orders at present. But this has been the case for a while I think.
that is why I call it aspirational, they hope to line up a builder again.

IAmSam 12-30-18 02:24 PM

I have ridden and loved my RB-1 for many years. In fact, I think it is such a great bike that when I had to reduce my "stable," I kept it over a Cinelli Supercorsa I also had at the time. And while I count myself among the folks who think it is a good thing to have Grant Petersen in the bicycle world, I am not a hard-core devotee.

Without getting into my feelings about Rivendell's current products...sorry to be harsh, but this latest stunt proves whatever Grant and his crew are doing - is not working! And if he cannot run a small operation like Rivendell without regular extra-curricular begging for money from his fans, let alone profitably - AFAIAC it is past time for him to find some new, better, advisors or partners; or face facts and just let it go and take a different path...

CliffordK 12-30-18 02:52 PM

Rivendell is likely trying to expand a bit. And, decided the way to do so is to stop domestic production.

However, I have to wonder if he built up a niche where the customers WANT domestic production. :foo:

Then he likely gets hit with $100,000+, or even $1M orders to cover inventory, which are hard to cover for a small company.

The Christmas season is good for mad purchases. However, winter is likely a hard time for bicycle businesses, and they still have to get ready for Spring which would be the big season, especially for touring.
