I'm in for one. I'm sure I'd never buy anything from them, so I'll donate mine. Anybody up for finding a worthy BF member we could all donate the $10 cards to, maybe they could do something with it instead of just throwing them in a drawer? Possibly a voting poll thread to elect a worthy member?

I need 249 more cards to fund my new Atlantis frame. Thank you for your help.

Rivendell has been important for promoting cycling as an adult activity that anyone can enjoy and the steel bikes we love. I hope the gift cards help them through the winter.

I've never wanted bikeforums' old-ass phpBB to support "likes" as much as in this thread...:thumb:

It could, there are mods for that. The problem is that it's playing with fire to add stuff to a forum with as large a database as this thing is running.

At this point, we should call Rivendell what it really is: a quasi-co-op.

now thats an idea i can get behind - i'd throw in much more than $10 for some kind of (non-managerial/non-decisionmaking) cooperative role.

I'd argue that it is a de facto co-op. All profits are plowed back into the company. Grant only pays himself a salary, there's no cash buildup. There are no plans to ever put the company up for sale.

Who knows what might happen in the future. There's clearly value to the Rivendell brand.

Compare and contrast to the REI model, tell me what the differences are.

If I ever spend Rivendell money on a frame, it probably won't be another Rivendell, so I'm a little conflicted. I'd like to see Rivendell stay in business, but if I get some of the gift cards it would basically be a donation. I'll have to think about this one.

You can always by some lip balm or s hatchet.

I was torn too until I thought about an old friend who quit building frames back in the 90's because he wasn't making enough to survive.
Didn't want to see that talent lost to the bicycle world like it was for me when Gunnar quit.
So I bought one. How many catalogs cost you like a coffee table book anyway.

Like I said, it would basically be a donation. I don't use lip balm or hatchets. There are a few things I may have bought, but they are sold out, and everything else he sells is nearly double what I would normally pay. I recently bought a nitto dirt-drop stem from Outside Outfitters for $37. Riv wants $68 for the same exact stem. Just about everything they sell is like that. It's a bummer they can't make money selling cool retro bikes, but that's the way markets work. Life is hard.

Yep, it's too bad the little brick and mortars paying local people have to compete with warehouses on the internet.
That's why my LBS gets my foot in the door for cables, ends, ferrules, bottom bracket parts, h-bars and more even though I could buy them cheaper on the net.
It's a conscious choice some of us make so we can continue to have that resource.

He needs some outside investment like Niner.
We don't know how big of a hump he needs to get over.

I don't know what the LBS has to do with it. Rivendell is an online retailer. They may have a physical location, but I'll never go there. I live in Chicago. I respect other people's decision to support whatever businesses they want for whatever reason they want. I normally don't care enough to even give it a second thought. I like Rivendell, so I went to the website and literally couldn't find a single thing I would buy that wasn't sold out.

To redeem my card I'd be happy just to receive a print copy of the catalog. I love my old B-stone catalogs and they for sure helped shape my love of traditional bikes.

Alright, alright, take it outside, or PM.
Replace Brian Boitano with Grant Petersen:

Timely non sequitur...I shot Boitano's post skate network interview straight from the ice after beating Brian Orser for the gold in Calgary. Do I wish it was Grant instead? Hard to say. Best 3 weeks of my life.

Don't let me interrupt...continue.

Debating whether to go in, or just buy some stuff. Seems like either way would help their cash flow and I'd probably drop more if I buy stuff than if I bought the gift card, but who knows. Have to think on it when I get home from work tonight.

FBOATSB 02-23-18 03:42 PM

The first time I ever saw a Rivendell in person was four years ago where there about eight or ten of them lined up on the floor of a LBS. I was very impressed with their grail worthiness. Sadly way out of my budget. It would be a shame to see them disappear from the landscape.

Also in.

Build a modern XO-1.

Or just do the one you did before Grant.....

No, I don't want an Atlantis.

I’d happily donate my $10.00 card to any member voted as worthy, or just one that had a need for that matter. Interesting suggestion that merits consideration.

Absolutely! They offer what you rarely see anymore at a mainstream bike store - steel frame selection, friction derailleurs, silver components, classically inspired items, touring and practical items, etc.

I bought 2.

For me it was a small effort to thank them for their outstanding MUSA shorts that are actually accurately sized and well made and comfortable.
