Separated shoulder = time to service the stable

Trying to look at this positively. Got wrecked out the other day by a dog that ran into my front wheel. Badly separated the AC joint on my right shoulder and displaced the bone. Third day sitting home, spaced out on pain meds. And I'm going bonkers.

But I guess the down time will let me go over all the bikes thoroughly once I can start using the arm some. Got my first set of tubulars in a long time coming too. Guess I can take my time gluing those up. And the Tempo still needs to be built as well as a Reus frame I just picked up. Gives me time also to get some really good pics of the two or three bikes I'll be moving on this spring. Anyway, just rambling....drugs are kicking in again. I wanna ride!

Bikes: Yes

Good thing it's not a collar bone, that is usually the first to go. I've been with and seen a couple of those breaks. Get well soon!

I am about to post a long thread you can waste time reading through.

Bikes: Too many, but sometimes not enough.

Ouch! Sorry to hear about your accident. Please take enough time for everything to heal -- I know I always want to rush the recovery, and usually regret pushing things.

Are they talking about surgery to re-attach the ligaments? I've heard lots of conflicting advise on shoulder separations. Surgery is either the best or worst thing for them, depending on who you ask :-(

Yes, healing will happen if you give it time!

I was in your shoes when my knee crapped out on me. Took the time to nurse it while upgrading the fleet.

True though, a joy to finally face the road again.

Ouch! I also hit a dog (a bulldog, I'm told) a couple of years ago and wound up with a separated shoulder and a moderate concussion. I'm better now, although a bunch of ligaments are toast, so my shoulder blade is no longer really connected to my collarbone. I didn't really believe the physical therapy people when they told me the shoulder would function fine without the A-C ligaments, but darned if they weren't right.

I hope you recover as well as I did. My injury was a week or so into December, and I managed to go for a pretty good ride late in January, thus keeping my decade-plus streak of going for at least one ride every month intact. You should be good to go by early April, I hope.

No clue yet. I see the Ortho doc next week. I think its the same guy that did my 3 knee surgeries.

Glad to hear you are alright.

How is the bike (can’t believe no one’s asked yet)?

Really sorry to hear about that. Take care of yourself, follow doctors orders, and give it the proper time to heal. It sounds like you have a good attitude.

So did you buy the Jan de Reus over on the Paceline forum? You can work on building that up.

Bikes: It's complicated.

Really good to see you've got a good attitude about this. Every malady I've had in the past few years has forced me to focus on the recovery, and I've come back stronger as a result.

Luckily it was 20 degrees out and I had taken the Jake The Snake out in case I ran into ice. Some road rash to the lever and the front brake as well as the tape seemed to be it. He literally knocked the front wheel to the side and out from under me. I kept both hands on the bars and my shoulder took most of it. Left thumb joint and shoulder and chest sore too. I was just watching The Grand Tour and my left chest around the collar bone really hurts when I laugh.

I'm just glad I didn't wreck one of my steel babies.

I was in denial the whole 8 miles home after the wreck. I kept telling myself the popping in my shoulder was just a strained muscle, lol!

Man, really sorry to hear this. Glad it's not worse, and glad the bike wasn't anything vintage steel. I've broken my elbow + cracked a rib in a bike vs. car incident. Time to just put in the time healing. The Grand Tour is a good way to do so, I might add! Good choice. Get well soon!

James, sorry to hear about your injury. I'm not sure if a Separated Shoulder can lead to Adhesive Capsulitis (Frozen Shoulder) but you definitely don't want anything to do with that. Ask your Doc next time you see him/her.

I feel ya man. I've broken both sides, and it takes a while to come back. Don't overdo it, remember small victories add up!

A friend had a similar mishap a few weeks ago -- dog collision, busted up her arm and elbow. She tried to do the Zwift thing for awhile but apparently it wasn't practical with her arm temporarily disabled. A road bike on a trainer still demands the same ergonomics -- not suitable for upper body injuries. Maybe a more upright spin bike, one of the older style types.

Good time to work on those legs. Squats, lunges, etc.

At least that's what I tell myself when my neck is aching too badly to ride. Like today. On the plus side I had some great rides with friends Friday and Saturday before the neck thing kicked in again.

It's been sunny and fairly warm today but the last thing I want to do is clean the mud off the Univega from Friday's rainy ride. Can hardly lift my right arm to do anything useful.

Sometimes the best thing to do is rest, or activities that don't aggravate the injury.

I would not be in a hurry to do the surgery. Looking at a model of the damage, you'd think it would be absolutely necessary, but it's evidently not.

But do go to physical therapy for a couple of months. They'll give you a bunch of rubber-band exercises. Make yourself do them! I'm not naturally good at that kind of thing, but I forced myself, and I credit that to why my shoulder works fine now. Once the a-c ligaments are gone, your shoulder is only held together by muscles, so you have to make sure they're up to the job.

My bike was toast. Fortunately, it was my winter singlespeed on a cheap hi-ten Fuji frame, so no great loss. I don't know what happened to the dog, although I would like to think that he got injured approximately as badly as I did.

Bikes: A green one, "Ragleigh," or something.

Sorry to hear. My one dog/bike crash worked out a bit better for me; I even managed to stay upright, although the dog ended up in the ditch.

You'll know your arm strength is coming back when you are able to stretch those new tubies over some rims. That takes a little ooomph!
