Back in January of this year I purchased a 72 Raleigh Record thru Craigslist for a reasonable price. The serial number says it was built in the Worksop plant, ser. # WC24177. It was a complete bike but most of the chrome had rusted off and the paint was in terrible condition. I disassembled it and asked a few questions about it here. Most people were nice about my old turd and said to just touch it up and ride it. This is what I started with.

I spent a lot of time searching the internet for reproduction decals and finally went with Cyclomundo, Gary is a great guy and even resized some of the decals to make them exactly what I wanted. When they arrived in the mail they were better than I had hoped for. So I took as many measurements as I could from the frame as to decal placement. I even made a sketch for reference and took some photos. A friend owed me a favor and knows a powder coater that owed him a favor so we traded and I got my frame media blasted and powder coated. When it came back I got some Hemi orange enamel from a local body shop supplier and painted the orange accents and pin stripped around the steering tube. Once that had cured I very carefully applied the new decals to the frame.

I had a ratty set of Bontrager wheels lying around so they were dissembled, refinished, bearings greased and reassembled. They received a new set of Gatorskins tires also

Refinished front rim fit to forks. I found some brakes that will reach correctly.

I had a nice set of Shimano Tiagra derailleurs and brifters in the garage that have been installed onto the frame along with a thread less headset adapter and a thread less sealed BB to replace the original bearings and crank.

So it's come a long way. The new brakes should be here next week. Then I can get some new cables and finaly try out my resto mod. So far I am very pleased with it. Most of the parts I already had on hand and just needed some cleaning and polishing or painting. The bare frame is around six pounds with the powder coating on it so it should not be to heavy when completed. It should be a blast to ride.

IIRC the fork ends on these have an "omega" or "keyhole" shaped axle slot.

was it necessary to open this up to accept the Bontrager wheel?

Yes it was. I spent some time with a Dremel and a file until it fit right. I only took metal off of the lower side to be sure I didn't change the way the wheel sat in the fork.

If I remember correctly the axle set, and/or track nuts, on the OEM front hub had a "dome" that went into the omega/keyhole shape. Evidently a safety idea to hold the wheel even if the track nuts became loose.

Memory faint, so must ask if I have it rightly. Our numerous wading avian experts will know.

Last time I worked on one of these was probably before most members were born.

Note you have fitted black finish head fittings. Are these 26TPI or did you rethread steerer to accept 24TPI?

Good to be able to get away from the Raleigh/TDC U-race design.

See you have fitted cotterless chainset. Did you reuse the 26TPI cups or rethread shell to 24TPI?

The headset is English thread and it all fit with no issues.

The BB is a thread less one.

When you mounted new headset did you cut a keyway into the steerer or did you mount it without a toothed washer?

Great-looking bike! You mentioned that you found a front brake that will work -- I'm curious which model. Would you be able to post a picture of the brake setup on this?

I will be using a Tekro R559 it can reach up to 73mm from the mounting post.

Nice work ! My Dad owned a bike shop for 27 years and sold Raleighs. This looks nicer than the ones that came out of the box from England. Nice job !

The new brakes showed up yesterday. Put them on this afternoon and they line up as they should.

Here it is completed. I ended up going with a 1x setup on the front gear. I have ridden it a few miles and it rides really well. I'm very happy with it and how it turned out. I also got a new camera for better pictures.

Note you had a front mech on there at one point during the build process.

Did you clear coat over the transfers?

Me olde noggin did a double take when it looked up and saw the left brifter paired with a single plateau drive train.

Present head emblem appears to have been changed from the one which came with frame.

In looking at images it struck me that cycle no longer wears a single fitting from original - not a criticism.
