Raleigh Competition Team Issue

Here is a little cutie that I've had for a while, this ride is a saved from the Goodwill scrap heap. Crusty but not that rusty. This bike originally had The red foil Normandy hubs on Campagnolo rims, SR Custom cranks, Hatta BB, unmarked headset, SR la Parade seatpost, wienman 605 brake calipers and levers, SR custom England handle bars, Look clipless pedals, and Campy shifters.

Yep it small for me, this ride had a lot of paint worms, almost all of the alloy was barnicaled with oxidation that was polished up, the chain rings were worn bad. The BB was toast but I serviced it any way. The front wheel was Sora hubbed, the back wheel was original. The headset was had the worst rust of all the steel had a clean guts.

The frame went in to moth balls when I pulled the mechanisms off for another ride, then came a day last week at the coop. The 3 arm Campy in the glass case call to be put on the TI, it came with the BB both being pretty fresh. Even though the headset was a smooth runner I replaced, all of the cables and housing is original when I purchased, I'd replace the brake housing won't because its ribbed. The front brake had issues, The the adjuster stop holder was breaking the black button piece was replaced with a piece of dia comp. I got bored last week so I decided attack the frame rust with rattle can Ford red. Unfortunately it came up a little darker that the original red. The black and yellow was not touched.

i have the opinion that this was more of a replica, it was very difficult to find information and specs. I think it is a 1983 as near as I can tell, but I'm not sure about that because of the under bb pathway.

Can anyone confirm or deny the 1983 date? And or what pricing would have been. It rides great

If most of the components are original to the bike, then it's a sure sign that it's just a sort of "team replica", and not even top of the line model-wise, as the components are just mid level, at best.......

Op,
I thought the W in the serial number indicated more than "run of the mill" but I am no Raleigh expert...I like it and it's my size too!
Best, Ben

Love to munch my Captain Crunch!

Budget Campy shifters had no D-screws, slotted, I took those to mount the bottle cage and used Suntour screws in their place.

The Workshop bikes are a cut below the SBDUs in value, but still a very nice bike.

Good job! The red touch up turned out ok and the lug edges can easily be cleaned up with a bit of lacquer thinner. Don

Worksop closed in 1981 but Raleigh continued to use the w designation at the front of their serial numbers (only on their nicer frames) through most of the 80s. Yours is Nottingham built.
