P11 Paramount question

Would a 1960 P11 have a braze on for a chain gard on the BB shell if it was delivered as a 5 or 10 speed?

It could, they were mostly customs back that far. More likely you are looking at a mount for a small pulley for the derailleur cable. Picture?

Yes if it was not a derailleur model. Here you can see an example of a '53 Tourist with the chain guard tab: https://www.flickr.com/photos/837910...7622671354618/

Metacortex So it was probably originally a single or three speed?

With a chain guard tab brazed on, I would believe so. However, if that is true and the paint is original you should see witness marks from the mounting hardware and guard on the tab.

Whatever it is, if the $$$ are ok I would scoop it up and sort out the gory details later.

Wish I had your luck finding these.

I think that is a factory repaint because it's supposed to have a D serial number and that's a decal and pin striping from after 62.. From the pictures I have looks like guard was mounted at one time. Will know more when it arrives next week.

Tx, agreed, that one was just lucky and in the end was a steal.

Here's one that got away because I was to cheap, should have pulled the trigger.

Bikes: 1959 Capo Modell Campagnolo; 1960 Capo Sieger (2); 1962 Carlton Franco Suisse; 1970 Peugeot UO-8; 1982 Bianchi Campione d'Italia; 1988 Schwinn Project KOM-10;

I thought there was a period during which the Paramount could be ordered as either a 3-speed or a 10-speed. Would Schwinn simply have used the same frame for both, which would account for the extraneous tab on the derailleur version?

At that time Paramounts were built to order. I don't believe they would have brazed on a tab that wasn't necessary.

Bike arrived yesterday. On inspection bike appears to have been kluged together as a 10 speed (simplex rear ,campy front and simplex rings), from a lower speed bike. The bad, seat post is reluctant to move, front fork spacing 91 mm, wrong front hub and rim( sunshine and araya) and it may have more dings in the top tube than pictured. The good, has Paramount+Schwinn on cranks, Schwinn BB, Campy headset, Record rear hub, Brooks seat is a 1964, pedals look like the ones pictures in the 59 catalog and paint looks like it will clean up. As I have plenty of 10 speeds I think I an going to restore this one to a lower speed.
So my first question if it was a five speed would it have been a derailleur or an internal hub 5 speed.
2 what front hub would it have come with large flange Record? 59 catalog pict shows a large flange phone dial.
3 what rims? rear is 27x1 1/4 Weinmann
4 plastic or chrome fenders?

Not really sure about most of your questions. Seems like I ran across this bike during my obsessive research on the 58. Is that crank alloy? If so and stamped Schwinn + Paramount, I never saw that before and it may be worth the price of admission alone, got to be extremely rare I think. More pics?

I would reach out to Bob Freeman as he has several Paramounts and has restored many. He had one similar to this that in the end he was not fond of but I am sure he can help with some of this.

The frame and decals seem odd to me as the lettering is after this style was not being made it seems. We know they would do custom anything so maybe it is that.

Hopefully the $$$ were ok and while a bit of a kludge, it seems to be the real deal one way or another, I like it.

Cranks are steel like would have come on an 40-50's Paramount. It was apparently on ebay before( Dec) cause he said in add, was relisting it due to the fact top tube got dented dissembling it .hoe do I get a hold of Bob Freeman? I think it was back and repainted between 63-68 has decals and pin striping for this era seat mast decal has Arnold Schwinn on it.. $400 shipped I'm ok. Last set of cranks and bb like these on ebay went for $175. I think he would have parted it if he would have done more research. I was happy he took my offer.

What a sweet find!

If it had been a 5 speed freewheel, wouldn't it have had a cable stop for the RD on the chain stay? But with that said, if it had been a 3 speed SA IGH, I would have expected rear facing "track" drop outs. Looking at your dropouts, are they Campagnolo? If so, might they have been replaced when the re-paint and pinstripes were done in the early-mid 1960s? So many mysteries!

I believe I still have a set of Superior 3 speed SA IGH wheels from the early 1950s that IIRC are 26" S7s (I'd need to dig around in my basement). My guess is the front would match the fork spacing. The hub is low flange. I'm certain we could work out a trade, etc., if you are interested.

pastorbobninh Probably gona pass on the 26" wheels. Seems like it was set up for 27 x 1 1/4. I'm thinking a nice shiny set of veloorange Raid rims and SS DT 3 IGH and a large flange Record in front if i am building wheels for it. Ebay just coughed up a shiny chrome chain gaurd for it, looks like the one in the 59 catalog photo above. I like shiny things.

I completely understand. I think you are correct about the 27" wheels. I'm still curious about the rear drop outs. Could you post closer pictures, both with and without the current RD?

pastorbobnlnh every image of a P11 from the mid 50 on that I could find without derailleurs had forward facing droupouts of one kind or another the ones past 1960 seem to be Campy. Digging around I found 2 interesting images, Paramount D22 P12 It has the pre 1960 decal set on it, and an image of a P11 supposed to be a 59 ,with all the lugs chromed like my 59 P12 would have made a nice matching set

trainmann999 thanks for the pictures and additional information. I continue to learn and absorb. The P11 is a model I've not paid much attention to, so pardon my ignorance!
