Raleigh Bottom Bracket

Hey all,

Recently picked up a Raleigh steel frame and am having a little trouble determining the bottom bracket type.

It was a width of 68mm, internal diameter of 34mm, and the adjustable cup is right hand threaded and the independent cup is left hand threaded (tightens when turning counter-clockwise). I believe it may be swiss but that seems odd for a Raleigh.

Hoping to find an outboard bearing bottom bracket so I can use some modern cranks with a 24 mm spindle instead of square tapered ones which are on it now. Anybody got an idea of what type of bottom bracket it is? And where to find a decent outboard bearing bottom bracket? Thanks!

Raleigh 502 Tubing

Hey everyone,

Recently picked up a Raleigh frameset with "Raleigh 502" chromoly tubing. Is this stuff any good? Straight gauge or double butted? How does it compare with Reynolds tuning (is it like 531, 853, etc.?) Its kind of heavy but I plan to use this bike as a commuter so I don't really care too much.

" If you owned an entry level Raleigh mountain bike during the mid 80s to mid 90s, then chances are the frame was made from Reynolds 501 tubing. It was the workhorse tubeset at the bottom of Reynolds’ steel range, and was cheap, strong, and not especially heavy. "
