Anyone able to identify this rim from a ‘78 vintage bike?

Sure it's a Mavic....
It will help a bit if you tell us if it is either a clincher rim or a tubular.......

It is a tubular rim. I don't know much more than that because it from emails I'm receiving on a '77 vintage bike. Might be original, maybe not.
Seller provides little information.

The Mavic GP4 was first available in 1978 AFAIK, but they were rare. Took another 2 or 3 years before 'black' rims started catching on in the USA. I suspect the Europeans were less conservative.

It certainly could have been a replacement rim from the early 80s. Any race bike that still has its original rims wasn't really a race bike.

I cannot find any picture of a Mavic rim with "BBS" on it. Or any rim for that matter.

BBS is someone's initials. Race wheels often got marked with names. Made it easier to keep track of which wheels were whose when carpooling to races, etc.

It was a common practice for identifying wheels carried in race support vehicles.

Certainly looks like a mavic decal, and being a tubular, it certainly looks an awful lot like an early GP4.

I agree. Foil label and faint outline of a diamond logo are consistent with Mavic.

Yes, indeed; if you want a model identification, at least.

Thanks all. The seller swapped these out for 80's vintage Mavics now following my repeated questions about the wheels. That doesn't exactly help the sale on a '77 Colnago so I offered what the frame is worth.
Doubt that will go over well, time for me to move on.
