The ammo bag is almost perfect — it just needs a real metal buckle instead of the Fastex. The Ruthworks bag is beautiful:
... and priced appropriately. I've made it a point of honor that everything on the Lygie cost less than $100; this would be the first accessory to break that rule!
I want to thank all of you who have offered me advice and moral support during this project. It's made the project a lot more fun. I'll be taking the Lygie out tomorrow for a shakedown cruise before the Eroica trip next weekend.

I visited the local Army surplus shop on the way home from work (Andy & Bax for those of you in Portland). He's what I came up with:
Not as sweet as the Ruthworks bag, but at 4% of the cost, it's more in keeping with my "skinflint" ethic.

@Oldairhead — I've just realized that you are the owner of the Lygie Barn. I'll have to give you a couple of photos for the barn, since this frame is already featured there.

Since I brought up Ruthworks..... Yeah, the price is crazy. We bought one of his bags, the large wedge, because it had the exact features the wife wanted and would look acceptable on an older Colnago and then I swallowed hard and paid the money. The Colnago was free and rebuilding it only a couple hundred and the bag is a big part of cost of bike. Hmmm. The quality is not like anything seen in recent years. Total surprise how good it was. Myself I have two Karrimors purchased new in 1965 and 1966. That's good stuff. Used constantly and still repairable. Had a big batch of Sologne on closeout from Mel Pinto. As little as $4 for a handlebar bag and the largest panniers for $15/pair. They were well-designed and wore fairly well. Most were given away and I still see some of them. But basically not durable. The Berthoud bags made to same pattern I would not spend a penny on. Will not give another penny to Carradice. The ammo bag and whatsis bag shown will do the job and maybe last a season. Or not.
Obviously it will take some time to know if the Ruthworks bag lasts as long as it looks it should. In meantime it works and works better than I expect from anything non-vintage. Strap system looks normal, nothing special shows -- and then it mounts super easy and comes off super easy and the bag just won't sway or sag or misbehave. Just too much fun for a small thing. All made by one guy and he rides a bike and rides what he makes. Still an amazing amount of money. At least you get something for the money.

It's good to hear that Ruthworks makes a quality product. I'm willing to pay for quality for things that I'll use a lot. I had a custom handlebar bag made for my Randonneuse by Black Star here in Portland, and paid upwards of $300 for it — but it does just what I want, and everyone who sees it complements me on the look.
That's a small Carradice "zipped roll" saddlebag that you see on the Lygie. I bought my first Carradice saddlebag when I was a student in 1974, and sold it to a Rando in Eugene the year my daughter graduated from college — that would be 2005, I think. There was still plenty of life left in it, but I'm prepared to believe that the newer bags are not as durable as the old ones. The zipped roll is not very well designed: I chose it because it's just the right size, but it's hard to get stuff in and out, and impossible to snap the flap over the zip. It also lacks lash points for exterior straps.

Another option is Waxwing Bags - the customer communication is excellent. David Cain is a one man operation, very personable, and everything he does is custom at prices a bit less than I've seen Ruthworks charge.

My ordering/design process with Dave has been phenomenal. Those lovely Briquette colored items he recently posted about are my beauties.

I finally sprang for the RuthWorks Bag. Ely made a custom model with some slightly adjusted dimensions and a tombstone strap. It looks great!

I recently made a video of the process of rinkoing my Lygie:
My goal was to show the changes necessary at build-time, and the process of taking the bike apart. The audio could be better in places — this was my first attempt.
