What does that even mean? It still doesn't give justification for building a counterfeit bike
So The film Breaking Away can make a fake Masi and that's it? I can't recreate a fake Masi in the spirit and love of the movie, seriously, love for the original? Who says?

Your bike your choice. I look at it as a tribute bike. Looks nice!

Plenty of recreation cars out there and clone cars too.

Trek didn’t start production until the mid to late 1970s so I can’t imagine them making movie bikes in the 1950s.

Regardless, this build was out of love, no mater where it ends up. Can you understand that?

Breaking away came out in 1979 so easily could have used Treks and probably did somewhere along the way.

He is making a replica of the Masi bike used in the movie. He is not trying to pass this on as an authentic Masi, thus no deception.

Altered the fork? Where is the fork? The fork is not pictured. Yes, I did fill the Trek Stamp and this is supposed to be a fake Masi. It will never be sold as a Masi. This build was for me. My love of the movie. If there was never a fake used in the movie I wouldn't have done this. But there was a fake Masi in the movie. It existed. Sears? Trek? Does it matter?

Around 30 years ago, I bought a smashed guitar in parts- it was an early 70s Les Paul Deluxe- I mostly just got it for the case and for some of the parts. There were stickers all over the case, after a while I decided to peel the stickers off- underneath all those stickers was a "FEAR" stencil. FEAR used to be (or maybe still is) a sort of famous punk rock band. I got this idea (not too far fetched) that a guitar player from FEAR smashed his guitar and the pieces all somehow ended up with a guy who worked at a large guitar store in the area. I just used the case because it had this cool 1960s style brown tolex... and it had the cool FEAR stencil on it... One day I was playing a show and a guy says "oh hey- you have my old guitar!" It turns out he made a FEAR stencil and they proceeded to stencil everything in his old band's practice studio- Guitars, cases, PAs, pallets... just drunk-ass 19 year old stuff... I now knew the story about the FEAR stencil and it was a whole lot less romantic than I imagined.

A couple of years later I had the idea to get a new neck for it- I contacted Gibson, they directed me to the shop who did their 'second' work- I had to send in the headstock to prove it was a real Gibson Les Paul. They built a neck, put the original serial number on it and I played it for 10 years or so. Somewhere around 10 years ago I decided to sell the guitar- with the case. I made a grand point of telling the guy EXACTLY what the stencil was about- and that that guitar or case in no way was ever owned by anyone in the band FEAR.

Somewhere around 5 years ago- I got a PM on a guitar forum from a guy who bought my old guitar from a guy who was selling it as a guitar that was owned by and smashed on stage by the guitar player from FEAR.

Well informed 'purists' are not the ones who suffer from forgeries, no matter the article/artifact. Expecting a novice to research a serial number when under the time pressure of a Craig's List purchase is not rational.

As you know, stories get omitted and changed. Soon, this could be THE bike from 'Breaking Away'. Breaking Away was released in 1979, not the 50's or 60's.

That the OP has no ethical problem with the forgery should surprise no one, least of all him. It makes absolutely no difference whatsoever what was done by a movie studio or anyone else.

I don't know how best to rectify this issue. Perhaps painting a small antecedent to make the logo read, "not a real' MASI or MASI 'tribute'. For example, doesn't RHM impress his initials on the hides in lieu of the BROOKS name on his renovated saddles.

Something should be done.

I wonder what the MASI people would think. How would they feel about this?

Seriously, does anyone think I would try and sell this as an actual Breaking Away Bike? There was a fake in the movie. I made a fake and I love it!

Well, both Dave Tesch and Joe Starck started at Trek before moving to Masi, so maybe there is a connection … of some sort.

Well, I like it. So far no one has been conned, so no harm done, as far as I'm concerned.

Okay, let's be a little serious here. I'm reproducing a 'fake' Masi with a different frame. From a movie with a fake Masi. There is no way I would re-sell this as an actual Masi. Why would I re-sell a fake Masi when this is all for me- my heart- my memories- my life. Sometimes you guys are a little Hell if I Know!!

No. The pathway to hell is paved with good intentions.

You need to do something to remedy this fraud you've perpetrated (knowingly or otherwise).

If you paint a copy of the Mona Lisa and sign DaVinci's name it is a fraud. In the same way, labeling this a MASI makes it a fraud.

In the Movie the fake crash bike was supposed to be a Sears Free Spirit- painted as a Masi. This Trek called to me and I wanted the Bike. Does it have to be the Sears?

Obviously lost on some people. Plus ... he started two threads about it!

OP, what you've done to the fork, cable guides, and paint is really incredible. I'm looking forward to your next project.

No offense but that was funny. Remedy this fraud! LOL! There's a serial number that will say it's a Trek. Unless it gets out of hand is say, I die tomorrow and stupid idiots think they have a real Masi... I'm not selling! This is for me! I grew up with this bike. WTH? Mona Lisa? Really? Masi 1978 Mon Lisa? I have not signed the bike and anyone with knowledge will know.

Alright, I got a little story here.
I am visiting my sister in a small town outside of Paris, and there is a tiny bike store with about 20+ bare (unpainted) frames hanging on the wall, and another 20 or so painted fakes already done. Any color, any make, your choice! He even had counterfeit Colnagos to include the Gilco tubing. Frames with paint were about 300USD.

Were they French threaded? I don't know, I was just laughing. Yikes if they didn't look perfectly legitimate (from 10 feet away)

Anyway, you will enjoy the ride, those Masi frames were famous for it!

There is no pathway to Hell. There is no Hell. If I were selling this creature as a real Masi, then maybe, some trouble. I'm not selling. This is for me.

In for this project!
And for those that think the OP is passing it off as a counterfeit, GTHO. Think of it as a replica of a movie prop. I'd probably do the same thing if I had the time and resources.
Good job,OP!
