1970s Italvega Nuovo Record

New-to-me as of yesterday, with a mix of parts: Dura Ace, Superbe, Cyclone, Cinelli bars, Titan stem. I might see if I can fit 32-38mm Compass tires into those Dura Ace centerpull brakes.

More pics...

Dura Ace centerpulls will probably fit a 42 if not a little more. At least a 38.

Super cool bike.

Sweet! Anything with chrome lugs and socks is off to a good start. Any idea on the tubing?

...am I the only one who calls the partial chrome on the fork and stays "socks?" I guess that's more of an equestrian term, but seems to work.

I have an earlier version of this bike and I love it. They have Columbus tubing with Campagnolo Dropouts. They ride very nicely and were made at the Torpado Factory in Italy. Very nice indeed! Joe joesvintageroadbikes.wordpress

A lot of people use "Chrome socks" to refer to chrome fork ends/dropouts!

Columbus tubing, but I don't know the specifics, yet. Yeah, this one has Campy dropouts. I may make some changes, but the eclectic mix of parts works really well, and this will probably be my summer commuter/road events bike. Interesting to me is the very well preserved Wright Saddle Company saddle. Wright was the predecessor of Brooks, and their saddles were regarded for a higher quality. It's really comfortable.

The Nuovo Record model was the middle of the range. There were two below and two above.

Tubing is three-tube Columbus DB. Frame size may determine whether SL or SP. Blades and stays are unspecified, presumably Falck.

Dropouts are Campag 1010 but fork ends stamped.

As you probably know, Shimano DuraAce centrepull arrestors are Tourneys with a different stamp.

Of the cycle's original kitting it appears that not a single piece remains.

The presence of the 3D headplate is a helpful dating aid.

Earliest headplates were of stamped sheet.

You don't get a Titan stem on an acquisition like this every day, if ever.

Or a Wrights.

Nice score, well done.

Looked like sort of a rad looking, but still under-the-radar bike you might be able to lock up for brief periods, but that cockpit is so classy, it would be hard not to bling it out even more.

Both were definitely selling points for me!

Yup, I agree. For one thing, I think the bolt is all wrong for the stem, it seems. I'll probably try to find one of those.

Correct. And these bolts was also avaiblbe in a light version in aluminium (third party?). Although I wouldn't trust a vintage alu. bolt from the 60s for a critical fastner on a bike

@non-fixie & @Munny would be able to advise on Titan spares.

Tip -

Titan clamps are generally 27.0mm and the Cinelli bar that is in there is likely 26.4mm.

If you wish to retain the Titan on the bicycle you might wish to keep an eye out for a Titan bar.

The bars usually combined with that stem are called "Maes-Kint" bars, because of the inscription of the names of Belgian champions on the sleeve. Your stem seems to be the pre-1970 version, as the script is facing the rider. Around that time Titan changed that, so the script would "face the camera". Same with the bars.

The aluminum bolt is somewhat fragile and shouldn't be over-tightened (I found that out all by myself ). Finding one won't be easy, and the cheapest - if not only - way would be to find a rusty stem that still has that bolt. People generally don't put rusty stems on ebay, though. Maybe at a local flea market in Belgium ...

Funny you should mention that. The guy I bought the Italvega from is perhaps the best bike mechanic in town (he's been doing it for decades) and he said "It's weird that the Titan stem fits the Cinelli bars, because those are 26.4mm. Maybe Titan made a stem for Cinelli bars?"

I couldn't answer him, because up until now, I had never been exposed to Titan stems. Maybe I'll hold onto the stem, and replace it with a Cinelli, which is probably going to be easier to find than Maes-Kint bars and a replacement bolt for the Titan, haha.

BTW, if you don't have the aluminum bolt, or don't want to use it, you can use one of these seat post clamp bolts, preferably a nicely chromed one:

Titan bars and stems are sized 26.8 but if the stem is steel it shouldn't be a problem. only when the stem is cast al-alloy
do the bar/stem sizes need to be exact. BTW I think the Titan bar is too busy. I can see the Titan/Cinelli combo as
looking very classy!

referring to partly chromed stays and forks as socks is a very British thing
