Somehow the camera never seems to capture the gradient, this is well over 20% probably closer to 25% and is a wicked descent with a couple of tight turns at the bottom, doubly exciting when you meet a tractor coming the other way!

Grades always look flatter from the top and steeper from the bottom. Beautiful countryside!
Thanks.

Bikes: Yes, please.

Officially called Mill Road, unofficially dubbed the Cow Poo Path, because of, well, you know. Not much of an issue this time of year, though.

The snow is beginning to retreat from the Iron Horse Trail east of North Bend. It's not a quick progression though. 20 miles east of this spot the snowpack is nearly 8 ft deep on the other side of the Hyak Tunnel.

Not really, in fact, first time I've heard of these was a few years ago when plug streets made their appearance in the Ghent-Wevelgem Classic. A respectful nod to WWI victims on the one hand and an opportunistic one to the popularity of strade bianche on the other. In this part of the country, at least in my experience, when you go off-road you're most likely to end up in mud up to your knees. By the way, plug street is an English corruption of Ploegsteert, a small village on the Belgian linguistic frontier, sadly also final resting place of the golden boy of Belgian cycling from a few decades back.

Judging from day after soreness, some pretty mean cobble stretches on the road to Liège.

Thank you for the explanation. I was watching the race last Sunday and while I got the connection to WW I and the strade bianche, I was wondering about the name.

(BTW, I loved to see Marianne Vos win the ladies' version. Nice to see that even L'Eroica participants can win a real race every now and then. )
