Suffering Without EroicaCA

Who else is planning a sufferfest for April 5? After all the strategizing, building, training, gluing, I can't let it go to waste. Nearby mixed terrain is off limits so I'm investigating a ride into the Santa Monica Mountains where "Dirt Mulholland" might be open. The complete loop from my house will be long, dirty, and include lots of climbing. Toe clips, however, will be left hanging on a peg. I'll call the authorities about closures tomorrow. At the very least, I will put together 100 miles of paved road and 10,000 feet of climbing for Sunday.

The Turbo gets the nod.

I plan to do a 100mi as well but where I live there the biggest hill is 600' in 2 mi. I am still in a frozen wasteland so there is no off roads for me but at least the pave' is dry at times albeit still cold.

Since today is the day I was supposed to fly out West I was going to start a “post your Solo-ica “ thread. I have plenty of gravel and hard climbs but mine will probably be less than 50 miles unless I can work out a loop back to my car for resupply. Single bottle cage and no stores/water supply limits my range and I’m afraid extra bottles will bounce out of jersey pockets on the rough stretches.

We in San Mateo County in the SF Bay Area were just imposed with a 5 miles radius from home limit for outdoor recreation. Fortunately, I have some hills nearby and a couple dirt parks still open within my zone. Per your suggestion I think I will put together a commemorative route for Sunday.

There is a %30 chance of rain around here for Sunday. I rode my Eroica Medici last Sunday and it was great nobody out in Ventura county east. I will ride again on Sunday and probably do my usual 30 miles or so . The what ifs will be dancing around in my mind as I pedal along on my Eroica ready bike imaging all the good folks I would have met and beautiful bikes I would have seen. I don't think we will see Eroica this year at all , in fact no one knows when. Enjoy riding while we can , I am self imposing a ten meter rule for distancing which limits me to bike lanes versus "paths" . The few people I saw out were well behind distancing limits so no problem. Ventura has just shut down all parks and the promenade including Surfer's Point which will be hard to enforce. I will put last year's # on my frame and perhaps even the one on my back just for fun.

This was pretty much what I saw for the whole 30 miles!

Yes - definitely in the plans for Sunday, although I will not do 100. Here in Orange County, many of the parks and wilderness spaces are still open and I am able to link a lot of road and dirt miles to construct a nice route for a local Eroica. I think I will ride the Merckx, which was my bike for Gaiole last year, photo below.

I'm debating about partially filling a bottle with Chianti to give it an Eroica feel.

In the likely hood of NorCal restrictions being imposed down here as well, I just went to Google maps and sketched out the 5 mile radius. Not TOO bad. I'll be staying off the dirt if it rains.

I still have my Cass Winery water bottles from past Eroica events. No wine for me, just Nuun.

I got out yesterday and did a little gravel on the '73 Super Course that was to be Eroica bound. Fun day on the bike. I left the toe clips in the bin where they belong. Stay safe, lets all ride the next one!
Is anybody doing Pasadena on Sunday? The Rose Bowl loop is closed, don't know, but I suspect the parking lot is too.

Sunday is my usual riding day, and it might be a good idea to get out for a good long one before we end up here in MA with the same proximity restrictions as in CA. Don’t think I’ll be on an Eorica compliant bike, however.

All the Public Parks are closed, The Rose Bowl would be hard to close off. Either way Im foregoing the Rose Bowl ride this weekend and riding towards Seal beach.
