this isn't the worst, though.... it's just the easiest to get a photo of.
My commute used to go up a 14% grade, going up out of the Illinois river valley (on Cedar Hills Drive). To some degree, this is typical of many river towns.

I'm thinking that Russell's plan to use a SunTour might be best. My only question is about whether the derailleur hanger is compatible.
edit: I see that this has been addressed....

Steve, also in Peoria

I picked up a couple of entry level Windsors this weekend that had been tricked out with t.a. cyclotouriste cranks and 14-32 5 speed freewheels. One freewheel and one half step and granny t.a. will go on the competition.
22-85 inches with 12 distinct ratios ought to be enough.

that sounds pretty handy!
My commuting/touring bike is set up with half-step-plus-granny, with a low of 26 x 30, if memory serves. Seven speed cassette, so it is on the cutting edge of technology!! :)
The bike is seen here in low gear, on Grand View Drive.

I was looking for a way to get low gears on one of my light vintage bikes, so I was shopping around for a nice T.A. Cyclotouriste. Never did find a 175mm set, so bought the SunXCD reproduction with T.A. rings. Works great as compact gearing, with a 13-26 six speed freewheel. Good enough to get up the 14% slopes, albeit with a bit of grunting.
(no missing bolts in the crank. :) )

I have used a short-cage Jubilee RD with a 14-32 FW and 42-52 rings, it's not supposed to work but it shifted fine for me.

IT was working fine with a 14-28 for me as well but what I really want on that bike is seriously wide gears so I will save the huret for something else.
