Bikes: Crap. The box is not big enough...

derosa!

So I'm coming back from home depot, on my way to Cal Ranch today (no joke) in my loaded down pickup. I get to a little underpass and there's a man and a woman on bikes in front of me. She's on a mountain bike, he's on a road bike. She's riding erratically and so I pace 'em across the intersection and then for a couple of more blocks. She dives across in front of me, he follows.

I do a double take, because I see DE ROSA on the red paint. Then I look more closely and see a full super record group. Well, I can't tell about the seat post because it's jammed all of the way into the seat tube. The guy's riding with hiking boots on, and his knees are banging on the handlebars (it looks to be, painfully for me, a 56). They turn right the wrong way on a one-way, and I lose 'em.

Anyone have suggestions about tracking that bike down? This town is only population 50k...a want ad? waddaya think?

Bikes: 1 trek, serotta, rih, de Reus, Pogliaghi and finally a Zieleman! and got a DeRosa

Sounds like DUI riders. I would bet you could find
them in the same area if you cruise around a bit.

Probably related to the guy I saw riding a Gios Torino track bike, with no brakes in San Pedro, bike was in rough shape, looked like a bar hopper to me.

Would it be crazy to pull up to said person, say, "I'll give you 50$ for that bike, right here and now." and expect to get it? Maybe you should throw a slightly larger bike into your truck so when you see him again, you can say, "Hey, I had a bike just like that when I was a kid, I'll give you 20$ plus this other bike that will fit you better if you'll let me take that one." That way you won't let on the fact that its valuable.

Good luck!

peace,
sam

I have a fear of getting arrested for loitering or something if I just cruise through town over and over. and, of course, I have a life, sorta. maybe fortune will smile on me, I'll let y'all know!

I did that once to a drunk with a 1960's Murray Cosmic Flyer. I gave him $10. We were both pleased as punch.
I say go for it, but don't be too eager and don't offer too much or he'll smell that you really want it and the price will skyrocket.
