“The Wheel” by Huffy

This is a bike that I fixed up a few years ago. Unique 1960s muscle bike. The only parts that needed to be replaced were the seat and tires. The rusty chrome cleaned up nicely.

Wow, KansasJack that turned out nice, especially since it started off looking a bit rough. How did you get the pedal red strips back on. Was that "the Wheel" decal available or did you make it?

I was thinking that this was a three speed, but didn't see the shift mechanism in the axle. Then I realised that the shifter was connected to the rear brake. It seems to have a coaster brake, so what is the shifter connected to the rear rim brake for? Was it for a dragster line lock? I am probably missing something. I know that these bikes with steering wheels were capable of being ridden with the steering wheel spinning. Or am I dreaming that? This was a long time ago.

You can't mount a brake lever to the steering wheel so it's for the rear caliper. Well that or a Lenco 2 speed shifter

Thank you! The red pedal strips just needed to be cleaned and repainted, so that part was easy. The chain guard decal, fortunately, was readily available for sale online. The shift lever controlled the rear brake caliper but was mainly for show since the rear hub was a single-speed coaster brake as well. The steering wheel did not spin freely, it was directly bolted onto the steer tube. This bike seemed pretty dangerous as it was, so a spinning wheel would have been treacherous. I was able to find a redline tire for the front but the back tire was a whitewall that I hand painted red.

Old enough to have started these. Bikeman 4 you no less.
****** the spark, enrich the mixture, set the throttle, turn the key, push the starter, pull the choke. Heck, now they don't even have a key.

Bike turned out great, well done!
I just purchased a 1968 Huffy Wheel in pretty nice original condition but could use a couple items so have a few questions for you:
1) Did you purchase a new clear center cap for the steering wheel and if so where from?
2) Did you use one of Raleigh Ron's "the WHEEL"chain guard decals?
3) Where did you purchase the seat from?
Thanks, Jeff

Always warms the heart to see the dreaded 'H' word on the front page of the forum, especially sandwiched between threads on vintage Ritcheys and Pogliaghis.

Neighborhood kid had one when I lived on Ft Eustis in the early 70's. It was interesting and cool. A different ride for sure.

The 60's or 70's metal flake steering wheels were awesome! We put them on cars and bikes and go karts. Blast from the past!
