Well, here's an even more expensive shifting system--and one that's much more interesting to me:

Once committed and you want a spare set of wheels you get to buy anther one. One of the more silly ideas to come about for a while.

So, if you're out in some 3rd world country and your spokes eat the derailleur for one reason or another.
Well if you can afford a $1000 derailleur for your $10,000 bike, then you probably summon one of your servants who has been carrying your backup $10,000 touring bike on his back while riding his India-made clone of a Raleigh 3-speed

I'd just hire Cliff. He'd ride right behind you with a Burley trailer and a quiver of spare bikes. And he could probably do it on one of those Indian Raleigh clones.

Didn't SRAM do that for around $200 not too long ago?

Sturmey archer had a three speed version but it's quite heavy.

here's my 2spd IGH. yes, it's pretty heavy, but I only paid $75 for the hub, and maybe $199US after I built it up and installed tube and tire (tyre).
I will have to read about the Classified hub in detail. Look pretty slim.

Pretty cool - until the price. Reminds me of an automotive product, the Columbia Two Speed rear end

Surprised we don't see more of this, especially since the patents are long expired. I figure folks would make boutique, special runs of this stuff.
I'm really interested in seeing who picks up on brifters as those patents are expiring soon. Could make entire SRAM groupsets soon...

there have been C&V members who have made reproduction brake hoods and the like. IIRC, the market is very small and it was more of a labor of love than a way to make money (or even break even, I think). It'll be interesting to see how many copies of this Nivex inspired derailleur sell.

Such a teaser! Is that a SunTour derailleur. I'm not familiar with it. I know they made a style of derailleur that attached to the chainstay, but not this one. 2 cogs on the freewheel or is there another behind the dropout? All steel on a lower end bike. Interesting.

It is like their HoleShot BMX derailleur. But different.

Where is your son's shop?

He's head mech at bushwhacker in Peoria. All I know is he sent me the pic and asked when I last saw one of these. I told him never and sent a pic of the Nivex and told him for 1k they could spiff that up.

Jan's derailleurs now priced $729.

Free press release but among all, I rather like the analogy. Porsche still offering a manual shift in the name of many still wanting the full and more involved experience.

Yeah, but you'll still need $250 shift leveres to make it work, so you're still into it for about a grand.

And just to be clear, I doubt if Jan is making any money on these, especially if you take into account R&D expense and the extreme low volume this is being produced at. Then you have to commit to either making a custom frame or modifying a current one. It's an audacious move, and for those that feel like complaining about it, don't buy it.

2 speed axles are quite common on medium duty trucks. I've driven many 5x2 single axle dumps and flatbeds
