Setting up some cantis and didn’t keep track of what this spring was for. This makes the most sense to me but I don’t recall using a spring here in previous setups.

I was recently fiddling with one of these with one hand in a mounted Shimano 105 rd that wasn't cabled up, kind of in the dark, and the spring went boioioioioiing across the room, and I thought, "what have I done!?" Then about ten seconds later, I stepped on it with my barefoot, and said, "praise Jesus!"

Here’s the adjuster close up for an XT mountain shifter. The spring (red arrow) goes over the threaded barrel (green arrow) and then goes into the plastic knurled nut (yellow arrow).
