Tape between chrome and paint?

Any sources for the silver or white lining tape that is often used between, say chrome chainstays and the painted portion?

Bikes: 1964(?) Frejus Tour de France, 1967(?) Dawes Double Blue, 1979 Trek 710, 1982 Claud Butler Dalesman, 1983 Schwinn Paramount Elite, 1984 Miyata 1000, 2014 Brompton, maybe a couple more

I used colored electrical tape on a bike last year as a temporary solution, and it looked good enough from a few feet away that I haven't gotten around to doing the official stripes that I eventually got from Velocals.

First place I'd look would be at a local custom decal shop - the kind that makes logos and striping for vehicles. Otherwise, I'd just cut some out of vinyl tape myself.

You may be able to find auto pinstripe at OReily, Pep Boys, Auto Zone, Advanced, etc. Also auto detailing, painting supply.

Bikes: Too many to list here check my signature.

That’s a good place for the rainbow finishing tape that comes with, or used to come with, some bar tapes.

Bikes: It's complicated.

Here's another option - if the transition between chrome and paint is crisp enough, I've found that an oil based pen can do the trick.

Sharpie makes them in gold, silver, and other colors.

If I go that route, sounds like auto pinstriping tape would be the way to go. Thanks everyone.

Bikes: Yes

I've used this:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B085483NB8

I have a roll in the 1" size that I've used for seat tube bands, but I was also able to cut it down to a width that was suitable for the transition you're talking about.

(Most of the tape is out-of-focus, but you can see one spot on the far chainstay clearly.

Same stuff on the seat tube:

Around the $10 will get you a lifetime supply (50 feet).

Yeah, that's my experience! The one time I did this between chrome and paint, I probably wiped it off a few times before I got one that looked ok from 5 feet.

They're really good for lug lining, since you've got a hard edge to follow.

What I’m referring to is tape (or something) that is maybe a couple millimeters wide to hide (maybe protect?) the transition between chrome and paint

These are 7.5 mm wide. Or about 1/3".

I use Monokote (available online or at finer hobby shops) or vinyl material, sometimes tape. Lay it out on a piece of glass (a picture frame works great) and cut it to the desired width with a fresh #99 X-Acto blade and a steel straightedge.

Works a charm every time.

I used auto pinstripe tape and it will show a paint crease, so you have to shave that ridge if it's there where colours meet.
It also does not stick that well so a tiny dab of cyanoacrylate glue, and/or clearcoat will help keep it from unraveling.

This looks good to me - discreet, matches the luglining and logo and housing:

And you can buy various colour bands on that auction site, they are a bit thicker usually, and they stick better:

Andy K,
Thanks for this.....I have been using air-duct work aluminum tape and this look much much better.
Best, Ben

You can always use painters tape

I’ve solved this issue by using two strips of painters tape spaced at the desired width and then using the oil based pen to fill in the space. Keeps it from getting too shaky or chunky.

...I think what you're looking for is the stuff used in graphic design. If you're not too fussy about the exact widths, or specific colors, you can find it at office supply places. The adhesive is less aggressive than the stuff used on bicycle stickers by the repro guys, but it works fine if you plan to overcoat it with a 2 part clear auto paint s your final step. I once bought a huge selection of it in various colors on Amazon, I think it was. basically it's just vinyl tape that's been precut in narrow widths.

There are many other sources selling it, because all the graphics and signage people use it.

I've used it on this chrome end to paint transition on a number of projects, but unless you overcoat it with clear 2 part urethane, I'm not sure how durable it is.

That looks close to what I was thinking.
