Paramount Question(s)

Picked this Paramount up a little while back. It's and '86 in Fireball Red. I only have this one pic because I've already dropped it off to get one of the cable guides repaired and to have it repainted. I have narrowed my choices of paint down to two options, either duplicate the Fireball Red with PPG paints, or go for the "Solo Yellow" from 1986. I'm curious if anyone has already gone this route and knows what a modern equivalent would be to the yellow. At some point in the next couple of days I'll run over to the paint store and look at their paint books, but if someone had some ideas/suggestions that would be great.

Also, if anyone has some insight to the s/n format (on the bottom of the BB) I'd like to know exactly what the guys at Waterford meant, here's my s/n: 5800 WA 86008.

My guess is 5800 = 580.0 mm
WA = Waterford
86= 1986
008 = ??

Thanks!
Steve

It doesn't seem to be in need of a repaint. Have you tried polishing the existing paint?

center top cable guide is broken and rusting, on the non drive side the paint is bubbling a bit from the rust, and lots of not too poorly done nail polish paint repair. If I don't repaint and fix the imperfections myself, then I have another red bike (no real negatives with that), if I do repaint, then I can have my first yellow bike since my 1970s Peugeot

Wonder what price did you pay? How long ago did you purchase the bike?

Are you looking for solo yellow from 1986 only? Or are you open to other shades of yellow?

thanks! I appreciate that , though I did run across this link on the Waterford website, which for others they should take note (and corroborates exactly what you said)

Ha, like every used bike I’ve gotten I think (I know ) I over paid! I got it earlier this month (Oct).

Mostly looking for a basic yellow that’s either metallic or pearlescent, so tomorrow it’s supposed to be clear and sunny here in Dallas so I’ll go look at paint chips at the PPG store. I’ve kinda narrowed down to a yellow that GM used on Corvettes but I’ll have to see them in the sunlight. So yes, I’m open to other shades because I have only seen Solo Yellow in the old Schwinn brochures.

Nice addition to the stable.
It will be easier for me to spot you riding a yellow paramount.
I have a 71 that I love.
Your is setup nice with the Campy SR and Brooks.
Hear ya on the rain, Im hopeful for a good ride tomorrow but will still be a puddly and muddly mess.

...the yellow that Waterford was using about then is neither metallic, nor pearlescent. But it is pretty bright. I have no idea what might match in terms of brand color codes.

By the way, you didn't overpay if you enjoy the bike.

Bikes: 1964(?) Frejus Tour de France, 1967(?) Dawes Double Blue, 1979 Trek 710, 1982 Claud Butler Dalesman, 1983 Schwinn Paramount Elite, 1984 Miyata 1000, 2014 Brompton, maybe a couple more

Paying fair value (or higher) is the only way for normal people to beat the flippers on venues like Craigslist. The people who check every ten minutes and can go pick up a bike any time of day are going to get 99% of the great deals.

Thanks to everyone who commented on my comment about "over paying". You are all correct, and your sentiments are similar to mine. In my case, this bike was a consignment at the LBS and they were unwilling to discount as it had already been discounted. I'm not sure how long they had it, but I had been watching it for a number of months, I suspect the deal breaker for most shopper were the 13-21 Freewheel and the broken cable guide. Anyway FWIW, the LBS charges the seller 30% fee for selling.

You can never have enough Red bikes! What handlebar tape goes best with a Red bike? Red or Yellow handlebar tape. ("If" I ever bought another bike, it would be, yep. Red.) I'm stuck in a rut. Please help me. LOL

Here’s mine, 560C WK 86078. A older repaint I think, before I purchased it in 1997.

...they really are pretty nice frames. I've never thought that either of the ones I've bought used was an extravagance. Even though I bought them years ago, when prices on this stuff were higher.
