At the Last Eroica event, a few of us had a long conversation with The Promoter of Eroica California about the shortcoming of the Event and also concerning the possible relocation back to Paso Robles . Amado looked us straight in the eyes and said , "Paso Did not want us there, Period ,We tried very hard to work with them and they flat out told Us , we do not want Eroica in Paso. " That put an end to that idea and any hope of moving it back.
To put things in context , I used to attend a very large custom car show in Paso Robles ,It was the Biggest Car show in So Cal and lots of us would make the trek north every year , Decades in fact . For whatever reason the City canceled the show and the promoters moved it to Santa Maria . Later we heard that the Paso Legislators and Citizens didnt want the hassle of holding such a large event in downtown and having the city overrun by out of town Partiers anymore. Perfectly understandable . If I remember correctly, years later the Car show eventually returned to the Paso Robles Fairgrounds.
Paso Robles is a done deal.

I have a recollection that all the foot traffic and damage to the town square lawn was one of the town’s objections to the Paso Robles location. At least that was the scuttlebut when the location was changed.

When Eroica California was in Paso my wife and I stayed in our motor home about 7 miles or so north in a wonderful private park . I would ride in to the event in the morning on Friday and Saturday . The day of the event we would park the motorhome a block or so away from the town center . The second or third year (can’t remember which) I was pedaling in from the park and I heard the roar of a diesel truck coming . It was a full sized dually with a very loud “whistling “ engine and as he passed closely to me let out a cloud of noxious black smoke that nearly choked me. It wasn’t good enough to drive so close as to nearly hit a cyclist , the person had to make a point . Other occasions, not as bad, told me that some of the locals resented our presence. When Wes told me about the resistance he was getting from the locals , it didn’t surprise me. Shame , it really was the perfect place for a cycling event. I never got that in Cambria , I felt that we were welcomed.

I never did get a good answer regarding the things that turned Paso off so much to the EC folks. There were other biking events going on in the area at the same time and it's a well-known biking mecca, so there must be more to the story.

One of their big problems was the big tent stakes that they supposedly approved, left big holes/craters in the lawn, supposedly.

Totally my own assumptions, but I always got the impression that Paso and their local merchants felt like they did better on an average weekend than during EC, so they'd rather have the normal wine-tourism and horse-tourism than a one-off bike-tourism event. The two times I rode EC while it was in downtown Paso, I could walk right in to a restaurant on the town square and get seated, which isn't normally the case on a weekend. EC took a lot of parking spaces for the whole day and then left, not generating a ton of foot traffic in the downtown area.
Maybe you could start at Templeton instead? It does make a little more sense to do the Scalatores loop starting inland in cooler temperatures in the morning and having the biggest two climbs earlier, then descending to the cooler coast, then finishing with the easiest of the big three climbs and dropping back down to 101. And the prevailing winds are usually towards the West in the morning and towards the East in the afternoon. Starting in Cambria gives you cold weather in the morning, hot weather in the inland section in the midday, and the biggest climb (and descent) when you're the most tired.

Paso does an “Art in the Park” event that has more visitors and numerous tents which sure looked to have a potentially larger effect to the lawn than Eroica represented. Never saw a damaged lawn from Eroica as most participants were only on lawn post-ride which meant we were all pretty much in our stocking feet. I didn’t see what it looked like where the tent was set up but again, they had/have other events that had a bigger footprint…but no crying over spilt milk, Paso is a no go and perhaps Eroica is gone as well. If Eroica or a similar event is being planned, I just hope its not in a fairground or some other restricted venue that closes at sundown.

The fact that they added Eroica recently is promising, but they need to nail everything down quickly so people can make plans. All the indecision last year is what led to the small turnout.

I see the rides listed in the general website, but no way yet to register when I go to my page. I suspect they'll get around to taking care of that. (I have visions of the Powers That Be at Eroica HQ in Italy saying the Italian equivalent of something along the lines of "Jesus, Mary and Joseph, will those impatient American ^%#%%$&'s ever get off our backs?")
I confess to being mildly (and pleasantly) surprised there are signs of life for the Cambria event. I don't think I can make Cino this year, so I will all but certainly do Eroica CA, assuming the signs of its resurrection are not greatly exaggerated, to sort of paraphrase Mark Twain. But just like the presidential election, this event is an eternity from now and lots can happen in the meantime.

If you have done the event in the past you can log into myeroica.cc and actually see the events that one can register for. I know that it shows up on the front end of the general website for the event, but when one wants to register, nothing.
