Is this a Paramount?

This frame came in some time ago. Claims to be a Schwinn Paramount. The serial number stamped on the head tube is 7F00770. I can't find any Paramount or even any Schwinn serial numbers with that format but I'm certainly not an expert. There are no other numbers on the bottom bracket shell or on the rear dropouts. I'm guessing somebody just wanted to ride a Paramount and made this. Your thoughts?

Maybe?

A later one for sure if so.

Not a poorly made frame to be sure, CS bridge/BB shell interesting.

The real experts should be along shortly, S/N will tell us for sure.

Well, that's where the Panasonic made Schwinn bikes have their serial number. If that is the case this would be a July 1987(97?) build. Similar details to my Prologue.

Looking at the 1987 catalog, I see some possible matches. The Circuit, Prelude, and Tempo all have a pump peg like the OP's bike. However, I can't remember if any were made in Japan.

Is there a brand name on the fork ends or drop outs?

Circuit was still Chicago but the other two were Greenville, MS. I think the only overseas ones then were the Prologue's made of Tange Prestige.

These forums are a great help. Like Yogi Berra said, "You can observe a lot by just looking.."I missed the tiny stamped 1980 on the head badge. The badge was glued not riveted but the badge has holes for the rivets. I also took a magnifying glass to the front and rear dropouts. They are very beat. It looks like they were nutted at on time, not QRs. Hard to see but I spotted the remnants of "Tange TR" both front and rear.

Hmmm.....odd. If they used a head badge it would normally be screwed on. 0861 would indicate the 86 day of 1981 or 1991 if even still using head badges then.

Could be a Prelude, made in Japan. Not a Tempo (or likely other Tenax tubed frame) as the bottom bracket used was different, had squared off ends.
Might be one of the off shore Paramount Series bikes.
Am out of the country without access to my photo library…

The head badge is not original to the frame.

Bikes: More than the people who ride them...oy.

Completely non-expert question... Could it be a bike for a different market? Also made elsewhere, but authorized by Schwinn?

The offshore Paramounts all had internal top tube cable routing, this does not, so we can rule that out.

Thanks. Does your serial number have the same number/letter/numbers format?

Final clinchers.
All Prologue serial numbers that I’ve seen have the same format as this bike. Number-letter-numbers
The steerer tube has a 4-5 inch white paint area that doesn’t match the creamy color of this frame. The white matches the white-red fade shown in the 1987 catalog for Prologues.
Paramounts of this 86 - 88 era have long, fine, delicate “Paramount” logos on the top tube not the fat decals that were plunked on to this frame.
Head badge is not original.

So it’s a repainted1987 Prologue probably by Panasonic. In this condition I think we would be lucky to get $100 for it
Thank you all for your help here. Great community.

If it helps. Here's the photo galleries of the 87/88 Prologue I used to have and the 87 Paramount I used to have. Not the most detailed shot s of the frames but you can compare against what is shown,

Kind of too bad these don't get more respect, as it appears to be quite a nice frame. I keep pulling frames like this out of the recycling pile at our co-op. Some of them are amazing steel frames with cool features and details, yet no one seems to want them right now. It used to be dropout spacing that reduced desirability, but now it seems to be more lack of tire clearance and brake options.

And imagination, skill, ability to think outside the box.

If its not cartridge, plug and play, disposable, it seems to be to much effort for many now days.

Keep pulling them out of the pile, maybe someone will catch on.

You and I may be willing to ride with 25-mm tires on at least some of our bikes, but we're part of a dwindling cohort.

For many people these days, lack of clearance for tires over 25 mm in width takes precedence over other considerations, even for those with imagination, skill, and ability to think outside the box.
