Repaired Quill seatpost

Stumbled on this image while looking at a Moser Leader Ax for sale. Is my assumption right, someone repaired a crack in this? I don't think I'd trust that for an actual rider.

When you look at the close up shot of the seatpost you will see what I mean.

Is this a quill seat post? The one quill post I have has a long bolt from the top that works much like a stem. Not sure how this side bolt would function.

There is no way on Earth I would trust that post. Perhaps if the welder actually knew what he was doing, perhaps. But as seen here - not a chance. Nice frame though and that seat post is easy to toss or melt down or whatever. But using it is not a great plan, in my opinion. There are options, homemade to be sure, but options none the less...

Yes, it's a quill seatpost. My Schwinn 684 and my Moser run the same style. The side bolt locks down the jam nut piece at the end of the seatpost as you turn it.

The first one on this bike cracked in the same what. The replacement was still good when I sold the bike.

My Moser runs a different style

The advantage(s) of this quill design over a frame with a seatpost clamp being . . . what?

The ad does acknowledge that it looks to have been repaired. Pretty steep asking price considering this issue, IMO.

That appears to be a weld that runs right over where the top of the post is fused or glued into the shaft. Not great.

Given an appropriate post of the right diameter, I don't think making a new top screw quill post would be that hard.

sorry this looks like a clear case of Suntour derangement syndropme. Do not ride that seatpost.

the cone or wedge seatpost does eliminate the need for an external pinch bolt. BUT

don't use it in a frame that does not have an internal collar in the seat tube.

Else you risk bulging the seat tube.

Neither would I , when something is shot like this, then it is not rideable anymore

What could possibly go wrong? At worst, it assplodes, and your crotch lands on a jagged point.

it's part of the frame being lugless = no clamp at the seat cluster. Builders of these frames are giving it a "clean" look.

In my (very limited) experience, welded aluminum turns out softer than original, so I wouldn't trust it for seatpost, stem, handlebar, or other critical parts.
