New C&V content custom frame

I just finished painting a new custom frame that I built this month for a fellow in British Columbia, using a set of 1950’s Oscar Egg lugs and a similar age Ekla fork crown. Came out kinda nice, I think.

“Kinda nice” - that’s one way to put it I guess! Beautiful bike and I love to see the old lugs being put to use.

Bikes: It's complicated.

Those Oscar Egg lugs are a favorite of mine, glad to see them put to good use!

Can I ask what your rear dropouts are here?

Hey, look, a shiny!!!

I dig that you didn't fill & file all of the little divots and texture in the lugs away... it's a very "what's old is new again" kinda vibe.

Pretty, pretty bike.

Good thing that you replaced the original seatpost binder, if your Egg lugs are like mine. The welded-on ears are too crude to go with the refinement everywhere else on this frame.

Bikes: More than the people who ride them...oy.

Love the quirky pieces. Rear cable stop, bosses on the top tube (Tool Kit?)…the way the down tube stops are attached. Beautiful.

Lovely frame!

This will see seem odd. Do you know the weight of the frame, no fork? Just wondering. I'm working on a custom too with non-traditional fabrication, probably under 2kg. I want to compare with a traditional frame.

these are an unbranded double-eyelet vertical, not sure of the maker. I’ve used them a lot.

Yes, this set’s seat lug had a particularly egregiously badly welded binder, possibly the reason why those lugs weren’t used back in the day. I’ve had them for a couple of decades in my “stash”. I had cut off the binder and filed it smooth years ago. For this build I brass-brazed a more modern binder with an M6 integrated thread.

Stupid question perhaps...are the stainless steel looking rings at the top and bottom of the head tube just spacer-holders for the moment while you cut the steerer?

This was built with medium weight tubing, Reynolds 725 in 8-5-8 gauges, and medium weight seatstays, since canti brakes will flex lightweight seatstays during braking. It came in at 1972 grams which is quite decent.

These are simply placeholders for holding the fork in the frame while taking photos. They slip in and out and the upper is secured with a little thumbscrew. I’m not pressing the headset cups in until after I spray the inside of the tubes with RustCheck, then the steerer will be cut to length.
