So here it is: an early Zieleman, in deplorable condition. I just had the front forks straightened, fortunately that worked out alright.
The frame has no number, so the vintage would be an educated guess. I would say around 1978, based on the microfusion Cinelli bracketshell and the cable guides on top of the bb shell. The Reynolds stickers would indicate even earlier than that, but then they could have been left-overs.
I intend to build up the frame with first generation Dura Ace parts, and ride it. One thing is strange, the seattube is 58 c-t, but the toptube is only 55 c-c. not quite long enough for me.
The frame will need a complete renovation. The painting is not the biggest worry, although I will be careful to select someone to get the right shade and texture. The rust is a worry, it's pretty deep. And, the decals will be impossible to get. Anyone care to have a go at duplicating them? mswantak maybe? The name itself is not difficult I guess, but the rainbow bands with 'type special' and 'cycles zieleman' may be more work. And the Reynolds decals of course.

Bikes: 1 trek, serotta, rih, de Reus, Pogliaghi and finally a Zieleman! and got a DeRosa
I am SO jealous. . .
I have additional pics of headtube decals and rainbow bands if
mswantak needs them. I would get a set also for the eventuality that
I'll have one! I do know who Jowan used to paint/redecal his if you need
that info.
I don't think Ko ever used serial numbers, or if so I've never seen or
heard of them. I agree with the late 70's dating.
Here's a few pics of my Zieleman if it ever gets to me.
damn.

Thanks Marty, I know who Jowan used as painter: the same paintshop that did my Visser. What i didn't like in retrospect (besides the price, arghhh!), was that he pushed me to choose from the 20 or so colors that he had, instead of thinking with me about my wishes. And the result is very nice and shiny, maybe too much so.
Did you see those wrapover seatstays on yours (the elusive one, the one that you're not going to get!)?
I have attached a pic of a Gazelle Champion Mondial, from 1977. Same wrapover seatstays, but better finished! The points actually meet! And to think that Gazelle had 35 craftsmen working in their raceshop at the time, churning out those handmade racing frames!
Oh, BTW, for anyone interested in a genuine piece of Dutch racing history, this 1977 Gazelle Champion Mondial (58 c-t, 55,5 c-c) is for sale. Remember, when Jan Raas won his first big race (Milan San Remo, 1977), it was on a bike like this. He rode for the Frisol-Gazelle team, because he couldn't get along with Peter Post of Ti-Raleigh. When he won the Milan San Remo classic and a Tour stage in that year, he went back to Ti-Raleigh. And the rest is history of course.
