in one of the early posts someone mentioned the teal and pink Ross Mt Hood. I HAD ONE. It was, hands down, the ugliest bike in the world and yet somehow still kinda cool. The crazy stem! If anyone has a picture of that bike I would love to see it. I bought the bike before going to college in the fall of 1988. It may have been a 1987 model. I was trying to decide on either a cannondale or one of the trek "rough stuff" bikes. I had gone through the same dilema with my first real road bike in 1986 and decided on a cannondle. Anyway, the Ross was there and if i remember right the sales person pushed me hard to buy it (wonder why) and in the end it was so much cheaper than either trek or cannondale (on a BIG discount) that I got it. And for the record it rode really great and I liked it a lot. I ended up at Arizona State (remember this is the 80s with a heavy so cal influence, florescent shorts and visors anyone?) and everyone thought it was cool. So much so that it got STOLEN from the bike racks outside my dorm just weeks into fall semester.

The next year I got the cannondale that I wanted which also was promptly stolen from the university of minnesota campus that I had transfered to.

I haven't had a mountain bike (got hooked on road bikes) until this week when i got a 1988 Diamond Back Accent on ebay for $125. This thread inspired me to search for a vintage MB! It's my size and yellow and has full original XT so I'm excited and I'll post some pics when it gets here.

I picked up this '83? Ross Mt. Whitney HiTech last week for $100! I always wanted a chrome bike.

The bars, stem, and brake levers have been changed. If anyone has a photo of a Mt Whitney I sure would like to see it so I'll know what I'm looking for, should I decide to go back with original.

I'm pretty sure the chrome '83 Ross in the left column has the HiTech decal on the top bar so I'm betting it's a Mt Whitney like mine. It looks like the Mt Hood in the right column has the same stem and similar bars. I would be interested in some photos of yours if it's not too much trouble.

Edit: I got the photos mixed up. Mine actually looks more like the one they're identifying as the '83 Mt Hood.

Here's your photo's. The bike is really dirty as I bought it to flip and I won't clean it up until I am ready to sell it. It has suntour sport hubs. It is in better shape than the pictures show and should clean up nicely.

The chrome Ross' are coming out of the woodwork now! I was showing a lady friend a photo of my Mt Whitney the other day and she said "I used to work at a bike shop and I bought a MW when they first came out. I might want to sell it now that I have a new mountain bike".

Well here it is. It's cherry and original and all mine now! (or will be once we meet up in a couple weeks)

Note the correct handlebars/stem.

Update: I finally took delivery of the bike. Updated photos below. This thing is mint. The tires have been replaced but the rest is original. The grips and Suntour XC pedals even still look like new!

I was on the lookout for a steel mountain bike when I inherited this Fuji Discovery from a friend when he left the country. I think it's late 80s...probably made in Taiwan. Unfortunately it's not lugged, but the top 4 inches of the seat tube is thicker than the rest. Also the seat tube section transitions to an oval where it meets the bottom bracket. It's super green...sorta like a fluorescent John Deere tractor.
These are probably going to be "before" shots. I don't know much about gears or MTBs, but I'm thinking I don't need 18 speeds for Minneapolis. I might simplify my life and lose the front deraileur.
Anyone familiar with this model?

Tried to post this two other places with zero response so maybe this is the right place.
Fleamarkt season is on here in Norway and todays catch is this, an 89-90 Merida Aluminum MTB. It was decked out out with fenders, kickstand, lights and a dynamo but I wanted to see how it performed as intended so I "cleaned " it up, put on some weird VP pedals and my old Brooks and took it for spin. Had no idea bonded aluminium could feel so harsh! Biopace HP was much better thanfirst generation BP and the bike was nice on fireroads. Paid 50 $ so no real catch perhaps but the wheelset alone is worth it to me. Early XT is pretty nice stuff !

This was dug out of my garage, used to be my Dad's. If anybody has any info on the bike it would be appreciated. It has Tange 5 Cro-Mo tubing.

Hartmann ram, carbon 'monolithic' frame, not everybodys cup of tea but I like it

My next project, a '92 S-Works Carbon Ultimate (Cro mo lugs) is just about built, This is my 1st Suntour XC Pro build. IRD seatpost, Control Tech stem, 986's with SS5 markII levers, Ritchey WCS bars, Ritchey Logic Pro bottom bracket, Ritchey WCS Z-Max tires. I put a generic XT/Mavic 221 wheelset on for now. A White Industries/Mavic 231 wheelset is in the works. Less chain, cables and pedals /grips ,it weighs 2 1/2 Lbs less than my P-23!! I think I like it already This is gonna be a rider

It's only a 1993 but, by MTB standards it's pretty ancient...

I always thought that these old Raleigh Techniums that were made in Seattle,WA USA were very good mountain bikes. Heavy but, reliable!

This is mine. It is for extremely foul/bad weather commuting here in Denver.... I've tried several times to break something so I'd have an excuse to upgrade but, the only thing I've ever broken is a few intertubes

(I flip[ the barends back to "normal" position when I want to hit the trails/foothills in Boulder but, I like em' much better this way for city commuting)

I was just going to show these cool tires off but I see retrobikeguy has similer ones on his bike (his are black wall)... I remember Onza from my early-mid 90s MTB days... I thought these tires were cool:

Got mine off ebay UK, about £13 on bin and NOS,
yours are the early ones and much nicer with the amberwalls , shame is both the black tyres are overshadowed by the now rare and very sought after posey white ones that wore out faster than a communal school eraser , they can fetch well over $100 when they come up

They usually end up on a garage queen and do look kinda nice.

New paint after many a months wait,

trying to keep in with the 89-90's trimble stripes thing but with a nice rasta colour, picture taken in france by the painter just before packing and shipping back to me in the UK.



the forks are 98 marzocchi z5's, not really retro I know but they are servicable
and the only fork I had with a long enough steerer.



I do have an RS1 that will be sent for paint as soon as I can find a long enough steerer.

also a nice composite Roo bar to match



will get some more piccis up when I get it finished.

OK, I guess I'll toss mine into the pile, and it's going to be painfully obvious that I'm a road guy. It's a 1986 Raleigh Seneca that I picked up for $10.00 at a yard sale, with the intention of keeping it in the back room at work for lunchtime transportation. Put on street tyres, and it went from there. The paint is really beat, but otherwise it's a really nice ride:




I realize that this bike can take me down a lot of local back roads that there's no way I'd try on the high(er) zoot road bikes I normally ride. I add mudguards, rack, and pull the panniers off my Magneet (my normal long haul touring bike):





and the plan is to do a major part of the Chesapeake Canal Trail this summer. I'm now looking for another of like vintage, hopefully with the frame in better nick - and an inch bigger wouldn't hurt. The bike was my only trainer during this past Jan and Feb, and is the automatic candidate for when the stationary trainer comes out.
