Dropouts look right, though. Maybe they put the brakes in back on purpose. Are there any make/model markings on that fork?

Yes. Pace RC35. British made, carbon bodied, they were designed to have the brakes at the rear of the fork. I think one or two other makers did the same. Looks unusual but works just as well with cantis or Vs.

Frantik:

The MS Racing make was, I believe, made for one year only then either merged/morphed into Alpinestars.

I like the Muddy Fox, the shop I work at was a dealer for them and we still have window decals in our case for them.

A good bike in the 80s and early 90s but no more I'm afraid. The brand changed hands and now just makes cheap supermarket bikes.

Here's another Pace Fork from mid 90s - RC36 EVO - the brake bosses can be changed for either front or back of fork.

I've set them aside for this 92 or 93 Marin Team Issue dump find that I'm hoping to finish by the spring. The nickel plated finish is not in good condition so I'm planning to powdercoat it white. Everything else will stay the same.

NO NO NO NO!!!! Please don't powdercoat a nickel plated frame? You can polish it just like aluminum, it just takes more effort. Unless it's worn thin and to the point of the tubes rusting, I would leave it alone.,,,,BD

Sorry just my opinion

I agree with you 100%, but although the pics don't show it there is a fair amount of surface rusting at the BB, head tube welds, and seat stay welds where the plating has come off (nothing structurally damaging).

Also the bike frame has been altered to take a disc brake mount between the seat stay and chain stay, and disk brake cable guides on the non-drive side - and those areas are bare steel. The bits of black around the weld areas on my pic are my clumsy way of photoshopping it to see what it would look like if I just treated and painted those areas.

I've also tried sanding, polishing and clear varnishing those areas to plain steel, but it doesn't look right.

I've had estimates from local companies and re-plating it will cost far too much, so if I want to make sure that this bike, which has got fantastic kit on it and is the perfect size for me, lasts, powdercoating may be the least worst option.

This fork is light for as bulky as it looks.

I don't know what it's out of. Probably some 80's RX-7.

Yeah unfortunately I know all too well the cost of plating. It's the polishing that jacks up the price. Carry on then. There are powders that closely resemble chrome or nickel now, so there could be an option there?

Nice, on the Mazda rotor. I drove (well actually maintained constantly and drove occasionally) a first gen RX-7 for a couple of years. Unfortunately it sat too long, and the "leak of death" started to take hold of it.,,,,BD

How old is considered "vintage" for a MTB? I see a few from the '90s listed, so I guess mine might qualify too. I have a 1999 (# of the beast, upside down, LOL) Cannondale F1000, size L, in the Reptilian Fade color scheme. That was the first year they sold disc-ready bikes & frames, and I think the first year they had model #s for MTBs higher than F1000. The F2000 & other higher models had disc brakes & wheels mounted, but the F1000 came with V-brakes, and disc tabs, so you could upgrade when funds allowed. I don't really do MTBs, but I got a pretty decent deal on this one, before I realized I'd rather have a bigger set of wheels, & I ride primarily on paved bike paths and the road. I'm probably going to sell it sometime soon (maybe this year, LOL) as well as a road frame or 2. My basement's getting kinda crowded.

(Posted in both MTB Drop Bar thread and Vintage MTB thread)

I picked up a couple of interesting candidates last night -- 1987 Bridgestone MB-2 and 1987 Black Chrome Schwinn High Sierra, both in their natural dirty state.

And now the self-imposed obsession with how to build them up, where your advice will be most appreciated.

The MB-2 is in great shape and all stock except, unfortunately, for the yellow stem and bar. I am thinking about playing up the almost Jamaican national team color scheme. And, because it does not have the original stem, I think it's going to become a hot little drop bar allarounder.

The High Sierra is interesting and I would like to save the black paint, although, in spots, its in bad shape. Is it possible to touch up the black on chrome? If not, how would this bike look all chrome?

I've been looking for a good SS MTB frame and the High Sierra is it. I'm leaning towards something like this:

Thanks all. I look forward to your thoughts and opinions.

Got the Scott bars wrapped with hockey tape, 2 layers, white and yellow with pading under the bar. Nice and compy. 3 dollars a roll and it will do several wraps per bike.
