Here's a DeKerf I don't fit but can't let go. It used to be my fake sister's bike, for a while it was my commuter, then my recovery bike, and now it's my wife's ride. Not so vintagy, dents in every tube but the head tube and BB shell, and with one of the ugliest seats around - but it's a DeKerf, so it's sweet. Also shown is it's one-day configuration as a drop-bar mountain bike. Ugh.

I haven't posted it in this thread yet...
I picked up an 84 Stumpjumper last weekend.
I don't know what's all stock, what's not... I'm actually wondering about the Takagi Tourney XT cranks...
The weather's finally above freezing so I took the day off and I'm planning on taking her out for a ride today!
Anyway- here it is:

yes, yours is made for someone much smaller... back then models weren't necessarily as consistent... i.e. not using a sloping top tube unless necessary.

I'm guessing this is an early ninetys sorentose and I don't even care. I hate this bike. It qualified numero uno in my post on best and worst buys of 2009. (as the worst) I've replaced the broken seat and spent more than it's worth on this POS. I robbed the bar extenders for my next grocery getter. Hopefully my luck is about to change, though. Tomorrow I have high hopes of trading it for an early eighties Peugeot Orient Express that's in pretty rough shape but definately worth salvaging. Wish me luck...

Sorrento was pretty low end, but put a rigid fork and a new chain on it and I'd imagine it would actually be a better ride than a rough Orient Express.

It's also a little big for me...among it's other failings. It was part of a 3 bikes for 50 bucks deal I got this past summer. I'm lovin' the other two...hatin' on this one. Hopefully not for much longer though.

Hard to compete with Marshalls. Here is my son's 1983 Stumpjumper Sport. I'm really not kidding when I say it looks like brand new. Little dusty. That's it.
I'll post pics of youngest son's 1987 Bridgestone MB-1 in a week or so when it is handy. As nice as this one. Maybe nicer.

I was actually drooling more over the Orange and the Vox AC-30! That Fender looks pretty fun too.
Both of those Stumpjumpers are cool! I love the lugs and the crazy-long stays.

I'm going by memory here and 1984 was a long time ago but it looks nearly all stock to me except for the grips, saddle, pedals and maybe FD. Are those 'Ground Control' tires? This really takes me back to the good ol' days before McDonald's came to Moab. Hope if fits and rides great.
The bolt that clamps the seat tube was jammed- I ended up scratching the seat tube trying to get it out. Now that that's done- it fits great, but now the seat tube is scratched. I rode it this afternoon- ran a few errands and just around town- it feels great.
Yes those are the Ground Control tires!

Hey man! I love my old Sorrento! I think mine is up-graded from stock by LBS when I bought it though. It is "my bike" and I trash other bikes that I own that are clearly more "valuable" so as to "take it easy" on my prized Diamondback. I can replace the whole bike, brand new, for next to nothing but I never would. It's like a dog, or even the right girl. It's special. I truly am sorry that fast cloud hates his. I think that trading it in on a Peugeot is a good idea. I have one of those too!

I have a question for the knowledge base here? I was looking for a loooong tem at the flea market this morning and I found one. I have never seen one
like it before. It's a black Odyssey Pro. Standard steel mtb type, but with a twist. right behind the HB clamp, there's a cable stop. Where the usual cable stop
or pass through is, there's a cable pivot wheel with two grooves in it, and what looks like a stop screw of some sort in it? It's not round, but more like it is
meant to increase the effort of the cable as it goes down to the brakes. Does anyone know if this is meant as a "travel agent" of sorts? I have no idea what kind of brakes
it is meant for, but it was interesting enough to buy for 5 bucks. Anyone know the brake type it was meant for, or how to set it up?,,,,BD
This is the model. Does anyone have the instructions scanned? I know, wishful thinking..

Bike dued, this was a cam intended to increase stopping power without resorting to just pulling harder on the lever. I have (or had) instructions somewhere for this stem. My basement is in a shambles right now but will go look and see what I can find some time in the next few days.
Have to figure out the scan option on my fax/priinter....

Looks like I got lucky...Bye bye sorentose and hello Orient Express...A lot has been replaced on it including the bar, rd, shifters rimset and I'm sure something else but I just got it home and snapped some quick pics. It should clean up nicely despite the decal damage. Time to get to work!
Edited to add there's even talk of running down the original manuel, receipt, bar and other goodies!! (crosses fingers)

I'm not sure it's really vintage - not sure exact date of mfg. - I think I received new as a gift in the eighties - I think.

Quick update...I got my new grocery getter running and somewhat cleaned up. (see story above) This bike was upgraded early on with wheelsmiths, handlebar, stem, deore shifters and derailleurs and bear trap peddles. I swapped out the tires for some conti. avenue semislicks I had laying around along with some serfas grips, saddle and beam rack. I was able to retrieve the original bar/stem, shifters and rd. I kind of like it in stealth mode though so I'm undecided about the bar. Some shifter cables and matching panniers and I'll be close to finished. This bike has serious rust on the chain-stays and seat-stays as well as decal damage I'm going to have to live with. Anyway here it is.

Fast cloud,
Nice Peugeot there! I love the Japanese built Peugeot MTBs! I came across a 1985 Canyon Express at a thrift store several years ago, and have to say that in spite of having a handbuilt custom Curtlo, the Peugeot gets ridden more. Something about the small diameter tubing on the rear triangle gives it a very very nice ride. I've been on the lookout for a matching Canyon for about 6 years now for my wife but have not had any luck whatsoever. I've said often that I'd pay premium dollar for even just a frameset....
Anyway, love that bike. Wayy better than that Sorrento travesty.... You made good on that trade.
