Vintage mountain bike info on this forum?
#2
depends on whether you can find the right buyer or not. Vinatge mountain bike collecting doesn't have the same following of road bikes. I think that is because vintage steel road bikes remain excellently functional and practical while MTB technology has advanced so far that not as many people would actually choose to ride vintage MTBs. However if you can find a collector I would say you might get 200-300 for it at the most. As many forum members will tell you. It is worth whatever ebay will pay.

There may not be as many people into vintage MTBs as roadies, but lemme tell ya, they're every bit as rabid. There's at least a couple of those nutjobs on this board.
Also check out MTBR.com's bulletin boards, or inquire at firstflightbikes.com.

I agree with all that's been said so far, and also I've noticed that it seems people appreciate lugged steel, even on mountain bikes. It's not all that common to find a nice lugged steel mountain bike, and the quality ones I've seen are the ones that bring fairly high prices, as far as steel bikes. There are exceptions, of course. Your Redline looks very nice..........there was an old Bianchi Grizzly recently on e-bay, nothing special really except it looked to be in very good shape and had a beautiful lugged frame. I bid on it, but the price quickly went too high for me-

hmm I have a lugged tange 5 raleigh elkhorn that I can't get rid of as a beater on CL, original components only include seatpost, stem handlebars, cantilevers and cranks, the rest is gone and it's built up with a mis matched wheel set and some lower end drivetrain. maybe ebay would like the frame better?

Nutjob? NUTjob? nutJOB?
ahem. The redline is in very nice shape and should bring a reasonable return on eBay in keeping with Cyclotoine's estimate. Which is pretty good considering that new it would have been about $500... but Cyclotoine, I am sorry to say that the Elkhorn is best used as an anchor for any watercraft smaller than about 24 feet. The best thing that I ever bought for my ex-wife was a new Elkhorn (heh, heh, heh).

haha thanks Luker,... seriously I have begun to detest the bike. I put it on craig's list for 45 bucks under the heading beater. If I don't get any bites it goes to 30 bucks. if no one wants it at the price I stripe the useful parts and donate it.

Hey! If that bike still has the bullhorn handlebars, don't despair! They are worth much more by themselves than the rest of the bike. And didn't that bike come with the original deer-head derailleurs, etc? that stuff is worth a bundle too!

negative. It has riser bars that are branded raleigh, alloy. The companents were shimano exange 500LX, the rear derailleur is gone. However it's good to hear about the dear head as I have a front derailleur with the dear-head and it has a sticker that says Alpine Gearing Only. I like the novelty to that sticker. I think the components date this bike to 1987, maybe a later elkhorn, the maintubes are tange 5 cromoly

My dear ex's was like an '85 or so. We didn't last all that much longer...I wonder if the Elkhorn contributed?
The parts mix was as I described it, to the best of my recollection. Those parts would be worth a bunch -considering how much she used it (like, not at all...). Hmmm...I wonder if she still has it?
