Outer gear housing

So, still fixing up my bike a little at a time.
I bought these Campy outer gear housing things for $10 but don't know if they were actually used that much/at all on vintage bikes ..except for on the cable leading into the RD. The description said it was for 50-60's bikes equipped with the Gran Sport and Original Record components. Gave the photo attached. These fit over the cables coming from the friction shifters and have ferrules on both ends -I'm sure you all know this.
I've never seen them in place, though. I always see bare cable.

Who uses these? Are they useful? Are they a "dorky" kind of thing to put on a bike since they must cover up the downtube decals a bit? Are they only for bikes without cable guides attached to the downtubes? Seems like they'd be used with clamp-on guides that put the cables under the downtube?
Will they work with cable guides? The ferrules may be too large to fit inside the "cup"

I CANNOT FIND ANY XL metal CHRISTOPHE TOE CLIPS ON EBAY!!!!
Well, I would have won a pair a few days ago but when I went to bid (steal it in the last few seconds) it made me sign-in
Anybody have a pair they'd sell for like $10?
Ever try to make your own? That would be pretty sweet.
