Hello,

Came across this site while looking for information to ID a Peugeot I used to own in the lat 80's.

I have searched the forums and viewed the catalogs at https://home.wanadoo.nl/peugeotshow/, but still haven't found the right model.

I owned this bike when I was 16 and living in Europe, and for nostaligc reason, would like to own it again. Before I can try to find it, I first need to identify what it is that I'm looking for. A few years after I purchased the Peugeot, someone decided to steal it, so unfortunately, I do not have any serial numbers or specs to provide. All I have left is a poor quality photograph. I am not sure if it is enough for someone on this board to help me with an ID.

Given the decal design, it most closely resembles the Aspin model shown on the peugeotshow website, but I don't remember it being named Aspin. It had a longer name.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

European Peugeot models often differed from the North American models that I'm familiar with, but based on what I can see, the most likely candidate would appear to be a Versailles or possibly a Marseille, from about 1990.

Thanks for the reply T-Mar. I have relatives that still live in Europe. Asking them to be on the lookout for a Peugeot would be like asking some here in America to look for a Trek. I can have them keep an eye out for the models you mentioned.

Its a marseille. I just picked one up for $30 and have been searching for anything about it!! definitely not in te top of their line, but mines straight and rides great! Any more info about this bike you may have?? Mines got a full shimano 6 speed stem mounted index shifter setup, diacompe brakes and levers, 27: wheels..

90's? you sure about that? with a 6 speed, 27" wheels, and a 7 digit serial # Im confused.

The Marseille (and Versailles) go back as far as 1988. 1987 is also a possibility, but I don't have the catalog for that year and can't confirm their presence in the line-up. They definitely weren't in the 1986 catalog. The last appearance of either was 1990. The 1988 model had different graphics, hence my "about 1990" comment.

Your Marseille is a good match for the 1988 model, based on your description. At that time it was 2nd from the bottom of the lightweight line-up. The Versailles was the better model of the two. What color is yours and what is the serial number?

I just rescued a Peugeot Marseille from the trash a few weeks ago. I fixed it up, and it rides very nicely.

Mine sounds similar to a previous poster with the following:
- 27x1-1/4" tires and alloy rims
- Dia-compe side pull brakes.
- six speed Shimano Index Shifting derailler and stem shifter
- six speed freewheel is Suntour? It's definitely not Shimano.

Do others have a mixte frame with alloy "North Road" handlebars and a mattress saddle? Does anyone know the frame material? It seems pretty light. I'm guessing 4130 cro-moly steel. Was this made in France or Canada? Mine has a Canadian flag on the chain stay.

The mixte versions in my literature show racing saddles and dropped handlebars, so yours are probably replacements. I can't imagine a non-Shimano freewheel being original, given the vintage and indexed shifting. The spec'd tubing material is HLE. Peugeot never gave the ezact composition of HLE, but it's definitely not 4130. Most cyclists consider it hi-tensile or equivalent. Advertised weigtht is 27 lbs, which is what I would expect and near the upper end of the weight scale for a European lightweight.

It may very well be a Canadian manufactured model, manufactured by Procycle. They were shipping a lot to the US during this era. The tight profit margins on the low end models did not make shipping from France very profitable. Most of the lower end models were coming from Canada or the Far East. Generally, there is a reference on the tubing decal to the country of origin.
