The "Show off your Japanese bike." thread

No one cares
Thanks guys for the compliments. I'll have to dig up the before pictures. The bike's original owner was my fathers riding buddy, who asked me during a family even last year if I wanted his old bike that had been sitting around for years. It was in his watery basement and was really pretty rough, though all original with some cool dealer installed items. It did clean up very nicely but the before and after pics are pretty cool to look at. I'll try to get them hosted tonight.
EDIT: Actually I did find one. Here it is as it sat the day i brought it home, complete with "the flask"

True enough - but I believe in the 70's, it was common for other manufacturers to have short TT's and long ST's, before the advent of proportional sizing. If you're a taller person you really need to substitute a longer stem - but once having done so, you wouldn't believe how much difference a longer stem really makes.

Very very nice! The box arrived this morning--the seller had it already packed and ready to go. I assembled, greased up and wiped down, pumped up the tires, changed the seat, and put on some pedals then tooled around till lunch. It tracks really well, a very nicely balanced bike. The parts mix is VERY ecletic, but all the bits play well and are all nice nice stuff. Never had a set of Maillard 700's. The rest is NR, Superbe, and DA. I think I'll ride it as is until the snow hits, then get it sorted to an all Superbe build over the winter.
I tossed my bid $3 higher than the current bid with about 30 min left. I thought I'd just get a little vicarious thrill.....and then no one else bid. Pretty awesome deal since I've have been wanting a 3Rensho for a while now

I recently picked up this 1986 Fuji Palisade in Nautical Blue. Single butted VaLite tubing, Nitto bars and stem, Suntour AR derailleurs, Dia Compe brakes. I bought it from the original owner and at some point he swapped out the Fuji Feather saddle for a Spenco Gel saddle. Too bad.
This is actually a very nice riding recreational bike. I bought it as flip material but now may keep it. Either way, those foam grips have got to go.

1985 Fuji Opus III ....
This frame came from the collection of the late Gene Ritvo, I built it up with components I was saving for a special build. Neal Lerner helped me out with the Cyclone FD and RD. I was never a big fan of the black version of the Cyclone but it's fits this Opus perfectly. I now have all three different liveries of the Opus III, the '85, '85 and '86.
You can see more photos of this '85 (and the others) at my Fuji blog ...

Thanks Chris.
I bought her secondhand in 1981 for $350 from a bike store in Melbourne. I was a keen cyclotourist then and this bike blew my mind- I had no idea about constructeurs then.
She had no decals and I have always been keen to know the frame builder. The serial no on the BB shell starts with "TCC"and I sometimes wonder if thats for Toei Cycle Co... Would appreciate any ideas or leads from other connoisseurs of fine Japanese bicycles.
Frame has inv cast BB & fork crown, suntour vertical droputs, mafac cantilever brakes. Thru frame light cabling and rear brake routing. Wheels are hi flange hubs with butted ss spokes with Super Champion rims. Sugino maxy cranks with TA 52, 47, 26 rings. Nitto racks, stem and bars. Ostrich bag. Kashimax saddle. Honjo rinko muduards. The gears were swapped out before I got her, I used Huret Duopar with barcons.
The bike looks nothing like that now, I'm using that pic as a rebuild guide. I would like to thank North Americans for increasing the availability of randonneur parts. The tires as shod in the pic are wheelchair tires and on the rack is a worn out Michelin World Tour that I eventually cut the bead off and used as a boot inside the tire. Oh dear.

1982 Bridgestone Atlantis ARR 55O
I have a Bridgestone Atlantis ARR 550. I've read that they only made 300 or so of these bikes in Japan. Most likely designed by Hiro Watanabe of Bridgestone in 1982. It is a pre-Grant Petersen-era bicycle.
It's nice and pretty light. Weighs about 21.5 lbs with everything on it.
Components are mostly Dura Ace EX. Hubs are Shimano 600 EX, and brakes are Dia Compe Gran Compe 400. Frame is 4130 ChrMo.

Bicycle Repair Man !!!
1988 Kuwahara Shasta built on an Ishiwata triple butted frame and Tange fork which are the only original parts... it probably would have been fitted out with a full Deore level group as the Shasta moved up the model line in '88 and is every bit as nice as my '87 Kuwahara Cascade expedition bike.
Went with a vintage SA AWG hub in the rear, am using trekking bars and 105 levers, and figure that when winter is over it will get some slicks and maybe an upgrade to a Shimano 11 speed IGH.
