bike id help?

I picked up an incomplete bike, probably mid 80's, with a decent looking frame that has been sloppily repainted. It has simplex rear dropouts and a simplex seatpost. The dropouts are kind of more rounded down to an oval shape in back than I'm used to, and have adjuster screws. I haven't tried to remove the paint yet but it looked like a B at the beginning of a possible number on the bottom bracket.
The seat stays attach more at the back of the seat tube lug. When looking from the front at the head tube lugs, they have a litte bit of a bulge at the center of the thin parts that wrap around the front of the head tube. Just little differences from some mid 80's Japanese frames that I'm used to. Grateful for any ideas of what it might be.

So far it sounds French. Post some pics and let the francophiles have a go at it.

From: Soviet of Oregon or Pensacola FL

Bikes: Still have a few left!

Just from the info given, I would guess Peugeot or Gitane & likely not Motobecane but we need pics, especially of the lugs & components.

Thanks, sorry for no pictures, but it's not pretty now anyway. I scraped off some paint and I think the serial number is B701 95921, not too sure about the first 9, could be an 8, and the first 1 is a little faint. I'll have fun cleaning it up whatever it is, and it would be interesting if it were not another Japanese or Taiwanese frame. (the dropouts definitely look different than the older simplex dropouts I've seen on older Gitane tdf's)

Just wanted to add a little more information before I set this aside. The seat post is 26,6. It came with six speed shimano 105. The rear brake cable guides are along the top of the top tube. Only the outside of the drive side chainstay is crimped. Downtube shifter bosses, pump peg, chain hanger, and dual water bottle mounts. Frame feels pretty light stripped. I tried to find some pictures of gitanes and peugeots and the only things I noticed were that the chainstay crimps on most of the peugeot chainstays looked more severe than this one, and the seat lug of a later gitane super corsa looked similar in that the stays were attached to the back of the seat tube, but those gitanes had what looked like different brake cable routing. Anyway, hopefully pics eventually, thanks again.
