Question for people with shellaced bar tape.

I have no experience with this...does anyone who has used shellac have any thoughts as to which color (blond, amber, garnet) would be my best bet for trying to get this green tape to a deep forest green?

I've only ever used blonde and it really darkens things up. Used it on blue and made it a very dark navy, almost black. Would def darken up the green.

I used the amber on the red tape and it turned a deep burgundy.

Do a test on a small piece of bar tape. Clear will darken any color but will stay in the same hue. The amber color will change it. Go back to your art class color chart and think about how adding colors changes other colors.

Post a photo of your results for the rest of us!

Bikes: have about 30 bikes right now

I'll check with my 10 year old she has the color charts memorized.

Actually, I'm doing this exact thing right now. Tressostar green tape, trying to match the forest green on my Heron. I'm using blond shellac flake. I have four coats on so far and the color is pretty nice. It's still lighter than the frame, but I'm not looking for an exact match.

As an aside, the Tressostar really annoyed me -- that stuff has always been difficult -- and being as I've decided to swap out my bar-cons for downtube shifters, I ordered some more tape. Vista brand, made in Japan, supposedly better than Tressostar and Cateye, but a bit pricey at $12 pair pair from Jitensha Studios. Just arrived today and the dark green is very, very close to the forest green on the frame. I think with a few coats of shellac it will be practically identical. I won't be using it for another week or two, but if the thread is still active at that point I'll write it up and add some pics.

Six coats of clear shellac over medium green Viva tape gave me dark green to match my Trek.

Yup. Clear, if you want to keep the same color but make it darker. Amber will give you a new color.

That's Viiva Japanese tape from Jitensha Studio, not Vista. I sold that Trek today at the bike swap for $250 without the saddle!

I have the gold but would really like it to be a more metallic/copper color to get closer to my anodized components. Any thoughts? And where's the best place to get the shellac?

Any hardware store or home center. Amber or clear, take your choice. Zinsser Bullseye is the commonest brand around here.
