Old Merckx for coworker

Promised a female coworker that I should try and get her a roadbike. Could not resist when I saw this 50 cm cc frame for 50$. It has a ding from someone overtightening the FD clamp, but aside from that it is quite nice. Maybe I will spread the rear and see if she wants it with modern components.

Great deal, a 'Catch of the Day' for sure. I'm not sure you can go too modern with that cable routing. Someone who knows more than I may jump in. In any case the components are going to cost a lot more than the frame.

Is that the original fork? It looks longer than the head tube by a fair amount.

What do you see that I'm missing?

Unless I'm missing something, the new stuff routes the same as the old. All you need is the cable stops on the shifter braze-ons and you should be able to use the existing routes. Spreading the triangle will be necessary though, and you're right about the components. Figure at least $500 or so to build it with Veloce or Centaur, assuming you have some bits laying about - post, stem, bars, BB, etc.

I wasn't sure you could use a modern rear dérailleur with cabling on top of the chain stay, but after looking at my wifes modern bike, I guess there's no reason why not. My bad.

ploddersluck, you are a guru at finding these kinds of frames.

Thats a fairly early Merckx. I know a guy who has one, similar size and colour. Are the chainstays diamond shaped? If so, it might actually be a de Rosa built frame.

I prefer cable routing over the top (less of a bend at the back).. That is sweet, if I found that baby I would be slapping an early 80s nuovo record group on it. The one on my girlfriends 50cm GIOS.
