Yes, another identify-this-Peugeot thread

A friend has recently picked up the Peugeot pictured and wants help identifying the model and value. He says it is a 22" frame, 22" top tube with Rigida chromolux 700c rims with presta valves, simplex mechs, Altunberger synchron brake calipers, Huret wingnuts on axles. I had a similar frameset earlier this year and figured it was a UE8 from the late 70s/early 80s. Any confirmation of that and any idea as to value?

Thanks,

Neal

MiamiJim will be able to tell you for sure.
But, with the braze ons for rack and generator, I'd say it a touring variant, Probably a AE-8, as it lacks the half chrome fork. It's got to be older than late 80's. It has down-tube shifters and wing nuts, probably late 60's early 70's .

It's strange that it does not have Mafac "Racers" and it has an odd crank, most had the Nervar, which it might still be a Nervar, but it's not the common one.

If it was local to me I'd be begging for that bike!

Bikes: Peugeot A08, UO8, UE8, UO18, UE18, PX10, PR10, Serrota CSI, Cannondale Ironman Slice 2, Cannondale F600

Unusual combination of attributes

I will be interested in seeing what the experts have to say about this bike. Pump pegs on top tube, black lugs, wingnuts, completely painted fork, braze-ons for rack & generator... I believe the decals indicate an early to mid-70s bike. What type of tubing does this bike have (the decal on the seat tube should say)?

Tom,

I missed the pegs on the top tube!

I'd venture to say that this was a European market machine.

I agree. I don't think I've ever seen that color. I wonder if someone painted the lugs in an attempt to make it look like a PX10. I'd say early seventies.

Me too, but I did notice they were missing from the down tube.
I dig the black lugs, but it looks silly with the painted fork.

EDIT: I think we need an "identifty this Peugeot" sticky.

Here's a link to the 1972 P8E on retropeugeot: https://home.wanadoo.nl/retropeugeot/1972/1972_5.gif

Black lugs, painted fork, top tube pump pegs, rear rack tabs and such, different crankset, however.

I have a 1974 Peugeot master catalog with all models produced pictured with a model by model parts breakdown. Its a pre '74 P8 variety or possibly a P10 variety. Most likely its a P8.

In 1974 Peugeot produced a minimum of 45 different models for the wordwide market plus another dozen or so for the U.S. market. Because of the variety, some model name changes were for 'trim' only options, it makes it extremely difficult to narrow down a specific model.

Jim, what's seems particularly unusual are the 700c Rigida chromed rims. Where those spec?

Thanks,

Neal

Nothing unusual....the master catalog only lists the manufacturer of replacement components you could order from the factory. The it doesnt specificaly say Rigida but thats what they came with. A tell tale sign of European models is the 700c rim. U.S. models of that level had 27" rims.

The owner has listed it on Boston's Craig List for sale. PM me if you want the info. He's reluctant to ship, but I can help out if needed.
