Well, that's all well-and-good

Well, that's all well and good but personally I kinda enjoy the background tic-tic-tic-tic of my Sturmey Archers as I slowly amble along the parkway bike paths. And each one of the AWs is different enough that I can tell them apart by their sound. The S3C ones have a different ring than the AWs, might be the brass material of the brake portion.

A bike sound I don't care for is the heavy tire sound of the knobbys going by, no class at all.

Humm the freewheel of my '49 Cambio Corsa hub is way noisier than the 8-spd Dura Ace hub in my boutique plastic wheels but i enjoy riding both.
And yes, the frame construction is a big factor in the noises your bicycle makes. The same wheels sound diffeent in a steel or Ti bike than in an oversized alloy frame.

Riding vintage bikes, I am frequently passed by riders on modern ones.
Is it possible that its not all the bikes fault and you are just getting to be a more "vintage" rider?

(I'm, as Pastor Bob says, "ascending" towards 50.)

hahaha, I love this thread, My Pug's Suntour FW is about as quiet as I've ever heard. I have to say that Wildwood's opening statement is almost word for word what I say to my wife almost everytime I ride that PKN-10E.

The only thing I hear on my Cinelli with Dura Ace AX cassette hubs is the chain. No noise from the hub/cassette at all. Of course there is the 'click', when I shift the Shimano SIS six speed derailleur, which I leave in SIS mode instead of friction. I must do this at least 4 times a ride (mostly flat on my normal route).

My Campagnolo equipped bikes are noisier, in a good way

My DT Swiss 240 hub is dead quiet. My Campy Chorus hub has a pleasing low volume musical clicking/buzz.
